The Matadors have now won nine-straight games to open Big West Conference play. CSUN is four games ahead of the next closest team in the Big West standings.Â
"We did a lot of things well this weekend. Our pitchers hit their spots and we took advantage of opportunities to put more runs on the board," CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers said. "We want to keep improving and if we keep that mindset, good things are going to happen."
Sherman started the game with a walk and then scored on an RBI triple from Katie Hooper. A sophomore catcher from Burbank, Calif., Hooper now has 48 RBIs on the season, tying her with teammate Taylor Glover for the third-most in school history for a single season.Â
In the top of the second, Sherman laced a single up the middle to score Maylynn Mitchell and Ariana Wassmer.Â
In the fifth inning, the Matadors tacked on four more runs. Cortney Horne recorded a pinch-hit RBI single to score Hooper. Aliyah Ricks came in to run for Horne and she and Taylor Nate scored on a two-run single from Wassmer. Daphne Pofek brought home the fourth run of the inning with a pinch-hit RBI single.Â
In the circle, Conley (15-4) limited the Gauchos to two hits in four innings of work. She added three strikeouts to earn her 15th win of the season. Sauceda tossed two innings of relief and Elder struck out the side in the seventh to seal the victory.
CSUN returns to Matador Diamond for its next Big West Conference series, a three-game set with UC Riverside. The Matadors and Highlanders will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 18 and a single game on Sunday, April 19. Both days are slated for a noon start.Â
