INDIAN WELLS, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (15-6) lost 4-1 to Long Beach State Saturday morning in a Big West Conference semifinal match at the Big West Tournament. The Matadors started the day strongly by winning the doubles point, but could not sustain the momentum in singles play and lost to the top-seeded 49ers.
Sophomores Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei won 8-5 in their top-seeded doubles draw. The duo finished the season with a 16-4 overall record and in two years as a doubles tandem, is 33-7 (.825 winning percentage).
Sophomore Vivian Lin and freshman Kiryang Kim secured the match's opening point with an 8-6 victory in the second doubles draw. The duo finished its first season as a doubles team with a 5-13 overall record.
In singles action, the 49ers won in straight sets in the second, third, fourth and sixth draws. CSUN was up a set in the top singles draw when the match was decided.
"I couldn't be more proud of how we battled today," CSUN head coach Gary Victor said. "We won doubles and had a set lead at 1 & 4 and lead a at 3 in the first. Mickey outplayed last year's conference player of the year and had to stop when the match was decided. Ki and Vivian came back from 0-4 to win the doubles point and were back to playing very high level doubles today."
The match was the final action for senior Criss Rodriguez. Although unsuccessful today, she finished the season with a team-high 16 victories in singles and a 16-4 mark overall. She earned All-Big West doubles honors last year and went 12-5 this season with teammate Jessica Warren.
"We raised our level to meet the challenges of a conference with five nationally ranked teams while having an unparalleled team chemistry," Victor added. "My assistant coach James Ciuffo put it best: 'Our kids left everything we had on the court. As coaches, that's all we could ask of them'."
