HONOLULU -
No. 10 CSUN Water Polo (15-11) erased an early three-goal deficit to come back and win its third-place game in the Big West Conference Championship Tournament over No. 8 UC Davis (19-14) in Honolulu on Sunday night. Marisa Young and Kelcy Barott registered a hat trick apiece to help propel the Matadors to the victory.
UC Davis appeared to be in control of the matchup in the first period, as the Aggies scored three times to build a 3-0 lead. The Matadors, however, would not be denied on Sunday as they made their way back into the game in the second period.
Kelcie Ferreira scored one of her two goals on the night in the first minute of the second and the senior would add another goal just two minutes later to trim the Aggies' lead to 3-2.
The Matadors would not be done, goals by Katie Kammer, Barott, and Madeleine Sanchez gave CSUN a five-goal period. Thanks to a stifling defense, CSUN held the Aggies scoreless in the period and took a 5-3 lead into the break.
CSUN added four more goals in the third period to increase its advantage over UC Davis. The two leading scorers on the Matadors in the regular season poured in two goals each, as Barott and Young scored twice, helping CSUN to a 9-5 lead after three quarters.
Two UC Davis goals to start the fourth cut the Matador lead to 9-7 but Young struck with a key insurance score with 3:15 left in regulation. Despite two late UC Davis goals that brought the Aggies to within one at 10-9, the Matadors would hold on over the final minutes to secure the victory.
With the third-place victory on Sunday, the Matadors have finished in the top three in the Big West Conference Championship four of the last six seasons.
