Powered by Albee Weiss' two home runs and four RBI, CSUN Baseball (27-19, 6-12 Big West) took the series finale against Cal Poly (21-23, 9-6 Big West) by the final of 6-4 on Sunday afternoon at Baggett Stadium. Rayne Raven earned his sixth victory, tossing 6.1 innings and allowing two earned runs.
After falling two-straight days to the Mustangs including scoring three runs combined in the two losses, the CSUN offense struck for six runs over the first five frames to build a large advantage for starter Raven.
In the top half of the second, singles by Nick Murphy and Nolan Flashman put runners on first and second base with one out. Weiss stepped to the plate next and smacked a three-run shot over the left field wall to give CSUN a 3-0 lead.
The Matadors added a single tally in the third inning with Yusuke Akitoshi coming around to score from second base on a wild pitch and throwing error.
An inning later, Weiss would be at it again, as the freshman hit his second homer of the game with a solo blast.
CSUN increased its advantage to six runs in the fifth inning. With runners on second and third base, Justin Toerner hit a sacrifice fly to right field to put the Matadors ahead 6-0.
On the mound, Raven pitched effectively through his 6.1 innings of work. The junior surrendered six hits and struck out four batters while shutting out Cal Poly through his first six frames.
In the seventh, however, the Mustangs trimmed into the CSUN advantage with a four-run inning. Peter Van Gansen hit an RBI single off Raven to put Cal Poly on the board. Two batters later, Zack Zehner hit a three-run home run to bring the Mustangs to within 6-4.
Conner O'Neil pitched a shutout eighth inning but ran into trouble in the last of the ninth inning. Cal Poly loaded the bases with two outs in the frame but O'Neil forced Jordan Ellis to foul out to end the game.
Weiss' multiple home run game is the second by a Matador this season. Chester Pak hit two homers against CSU Bakersfield on March 24.
The Matadors return to action on Tuesday night when they visit Fresno State. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m.
