DAVIS, Calif.-
CSUN Baseball (27-22, 6-14 Big West) fell for the second-straight day to UC Davis (28-20-1, 7-10 Big West), losing 10-2 on Saturday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium. The Aggies broke open a 1-0 game with a seven-run third inning that proved too much for CSUN to overcome on Saturday.
A day after the Matadors surrendered a late lead to UC Davis, the Aggies continued to supply the pressure on CSUN in the early going of game two.
In the bottom of the first, a two out double by Nick Lynch kept the inning alive for UC Davis. Austin March followed with an RBI single up the middle to put his team ahead 1-0. Matador starter Jerry Keel rallied to escape further danger in the frame by retiring Kevin Barker to end the inning.
Aggies starter Raul Jacobson pitched around a two-out single by Yusuke Akitoshi in the first inning and silenced the Matador bats in the second and third innings by retiring all six batters he faced. On the afternoon, he went seven innings, allowing two runs, while scattering seven hits.
In the home half of the third, the Aggies used a CSUN miscue to break the game wide open. With two runners in scoring position, Keel surrendered a second run on an Izaak Silva RBI grounder that gave the Aggies a 2-0 lead.
Keel would induce another grounder off the bat of Kevin Barker that looked destined to end the frame. However, Ryan Raslowsky committed a fielding error on the play, which allowed March to come home from third base.
The error opened the door for the Aggies to take hold of the contest. Six-straight, two-out hits changed the complexion of the game drastically. At the end of three innings, UC Davis held a comfortable 8-0 lead.
Although Keel was charged with seven runs in the contest, only two runs were earned.
The Matadors cracked the scoring column in the fourth, this time taking advantage of an Aggies error. After Nick Murphy drew a one-out walk, Akitoshi reached on a fielding error by Evan Heptig. Chester Pak would follow with an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 8-1.
In the seventh, CSUN inched closer on a two-out William Colantono RBI single. Back-to-back hits by Nick Blaser and Murphy then loaded the bases. The rally would come to end, however, on an Akitoshi flyout to right field.
After trimming the Aggies' lead to six, the Matadors would not get any closer in the contest. UC Davis added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth to build a 10-2 advantage, which proved to be the final tally.
Despite falling by eight runs, CSUN had runners on base in six of nine frames. The Matadors left nine batters on base in total on the afternoon.
The Matadors conclude their three-game series with the Aggies on Sunday afternoon. First pitch from Dobbins Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
