Late Rally Pushes Cal State Fullerton Past CSUN
5/9/2015 12:00:00 AM | Softball
Cal State Fullerton struck first, scoring a pair of earned runs in the second. With two outs, the Titans got an RBI single and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to take a 2-0 lead. CSUN starter Zoe Conley could not get out of the inning and was replaced by Brianna Elder.
The Matadors' offense struggled early against CSUF starter Desiree Ybarra. She retired the side in order in the first and third, needing just five pitches to record three outs in the latter.
CSUN's first hit of the game was a loud one, as Hooper blasted her league-leading 15th home run of the season with one out in the fourth. She now has 55 RBIs on the season. CSUN would then tie the game at 2-2 on an RBI single from Maylynn Mitchell.
Both teams had chances to break the tie, but neither could find a timely hit. The teams combined to leave 18 runners left on base.
In the bottom of the seventh, the first two Titans reached via a base hit and a hit-by-pitch. On a 3-2 pitch, the Matadors got a line-out at third base. However, in trying to double up the runner on first, the throw went up the right-field line and the winning run came around to score from second.
Elder (17-5) took the loss for CSUN, going the final 4.2 innings with three hits, two walks and eight strikeouts. With 360 career strikeouts, Elder is now sixth in school history. Conley tossed the first 1.2 innings for the Matadors, allowing five hits and two earned runs.Â
Ariana Wassmer and Hooper each had two hits in the loss.Â
The Matadors return to action Saturday with a doubleheader against the Titans. First pitch from Anderson Family Field is slated for noon. On Sunday, May 10, the Matadors will find out where they are headed in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
