Matadors Capture 2015 Big West Conference Title
5/9/2015 12:00:00 AM | Softball
With a 16-5 record in league play, the Matadors won the Big West Conference by one game. CSUN finished with over 40 wins for the first time since the 1996 season.Â
CSUN will find out its spot in the 2015 NCAA Tournament on Sunday, May 10 when the field of 64 is announced on ESPNU at 7 p.m. PT. The Matadors are hosting a Selection Show Viewing Party at the University Student Union on the CSUN campus beginning at 6 p.m.Â
Game One Recap
In a wild back-and-forth affair, the Matadors posted a 4-3 victory over Cal State Fullerton in game one of the doubleheader to clinch the Big West Conference title outright. Down to their final strike in the top of the seventh, Ariana Wassmer delivered a game-winning, two-run single to give the Matadors the comeback victory.
The Matadors' seventh inning was a wild one. Carissa Sherman singled and then moved to second on a throwing error on the throw. Taylor Glover then singled to put runners on the corners and Katie Hooper was intentionally walked for the second time in the game to load the bases.
The next at-bat resulted in a popout double play and left CSUN to its final out of the game. Jordan Sauceda drew the second intentional pass of the frame and Wassmer delivered the key base hit to give the Matadors the outright Big West Conference title.
In the bottom of the seventh, Brianna Elder (18-6) struck out the first two batters and got the final out on a routine groundball to shortstop. The win was the 43rd of Elder's career, moving her into a tie for 10th in program history. She tossed two innings with a hit and three strikeouts.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the sixth, Maylynn Mitchell gave CSUN a 2-1 lead with a two-run home run. The deep fly was her career-high fourth of the year.
Wassmer tied a career and season high with her three base hits. Glover added a double in the contest, her 11th of the season. She also scored her 47th run of the season, tying her for seventh in school history for a single season.
Zoe Conley started the game for CSUN, going five innings with six hits and two earned runs. She also had two strikeouts, but did not factor in the decision.
Game Two Recap
The Matadors fell 9-1 in six innings in the second of the doubleheader. The loss was CSUN's second mercy-rule defeat in the 2015 season.Â
CSUN actually struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first. Taylor Glover singled, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error on the play. She then scored on a wild pitch to give CSUN an early 1-0 advantage.Â
That would be as good as it got for CSUN as the Titans, on their Senior Day, battered three Matador pitchers for 14 hits and nine runs. Two Matador errors aided the Titans' attack and CSUN could not rally against a second Cal State Fullerton pitcher.Â
The Titans scored two runs off Zoe Conley (19-5) in the second inning. In the third, the Cal State Fullerton added four runs and Conley was replaced by Daphne Pofek. The Titans would then tack on a run in each of the next three innings to seal the victory.Â
Conley allowed seven hits and three earned runs in 2.2 innings of work. Pofek went 2.0 innings with with five hits and two earned runs and Jordan Sauceda also saw time in the circle.Â
The Matadors could not solve CSUF's Jasmine Antunez, who scattered four hits with five strikeouts in five innings of relief work.
