NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team took the field for the first time in the 2015 fall season, meeting LMU in an exhibition contest Saturday evening at Matador Soccer Field. The Lions posted a 4-0 victory in the preseason match-up as the Matadors introduced a host of new players to Division I soccer.
LMU scored twice in each half to secure the victory. Adrien Perez assisted on the first LMU goal and added his own tally in the 64th minute of action. Maurice Morton also had a goal and an assist for the Lions.
The teams exchanged early chances before LMU was able to break through in the 14th minute when Morton was able to beat the CSUN defense with a chip shot over goalkeeper Adam Hobbs. The lead doubled right before halftime as an LMU shot was initially saved by Hobbs, but the rebound fell to an LMU player who trickled a shot to the near post.
In the second half, CSUN had its best chances of the match. Carlos Gonzalez, Steven Manios and Bradley Mulvey all had near-chances thwarted from inside the 18-yard box. CSUN turned up its intensity in the second half, finishing with seven of its eight shots for the contest.
LMU scored in the 64th and 71st minute to seal the victory although none of the match's stats will count in any manner for the 2015 season.
Hobbs played nearly 73 minutes in net and made two saves. Kevin Marquez played the final 17 minutes and also had two saves. LMU finished with 18 shots and two corner kicks in the match. There were a combined 26 fouls and six yellow cards in the match.
CSUN head coach Terry Davila saw the score as indicative of the way the Matadors played.
"We got outplayed and they were more ready than us. It showed on the field. Hopefully, we will play better next game and we will go back to the drawing board. We are not going to change our plan, we just have to get better at it," Davila said. "This is the beginning of the season and we are going to get better."
CSUN returns to action with another exhibition match, hosting Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. at Matador Soccer Field. Admission is free.
The official 2015 season opener is slated for Sunday, Aug. 30 against Loyola-Chicago at 6 p.m at Matador Soccer Field. The game is part of a CSUN soccer doubleheader with the women's program playing New Mexico State at 1 p.m. earlier that day. Separate tickets are required for each contest.
