NORTHRIDGE, CA---
CSUN Women's Soccer (3-1) earned its third-straight victory by defeating the New Mexico State Aggies (0-4) 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field. Four different Matadors struck the back of the net including Kiley Norkus who scored a pair before halftime. Kirsten Von Meter recorded her first career goal in the match while Cynthia Sanchez and Kourtney Kutscher each scored for the third-straight contest.
Â
"As long as we stick to what we do well, the wins will come," said head coach Keith West about his team's three-game winning streak. "When we do the simple things, and the things that come naturally, we are going to do very well. I feel we have kept the game simple the past few games."
Â
The Matadors applied the pressure from the outset of the match, keeping the ball in the Aggies' side of the field in the early minutes. Off well-executed passing inside the box, CSUN struck first with a score just under five minutes into the game.
Â
Camille Watson dished a short pass to Sanchez, giving the sophomore an opportunity to streak to the goal and rifle a shot past the reach of goalkeeper Rian Nials.
Â
Following the goal, CSUN continued to build several scoring opportunities, executing many shots throughout the first half. In the 31st minute, the Matadors struck again off solid passing. Norkus received a scoring chance 10 yards from the goal thanks to a pair of quick passes from Breanna McCallum and Destinney Duron. Possessing good field positioning, Norkus kicked a shot over the head of Nials to move CSUN ahead 2-0.
Â
Norkus' first goal of the season would not be her last on Sunday, as she hit the back of the net once more minutes later. In the 41st minute, Nials stopped a shot from Norkus, but the ball bounced back to the sophomore, who shot again and scored.
Â
The Matadors led 3-0 at intermission and continued to hold the lead the rest of the way. CSUN added insurance goals off the feet of Kirsten Von Meter and Kutscher in the 81st and 88th minutes respectively. Kyla Diekmann earned her first career point by assisting Von Meter on the score.
Â
The Aggies finally cracked the scoreboard in the final minute of play, as Aileen Galicia scored from 35 yards out to break up the shutout. The late goal ended CSUN's string of over 362 scoreless minutes in the run of play.
Â
The last time CSUN scored five or more goals in a match came in a 6-1 victory over Pacific on October 19, 2012. Coincidentally, the last occurrence where a Matador scored twice in a game came in that very match, as Melissa Fernandez recorded two goals in the win. Â
Â
During the Matadors' three-game winning steak, CSUN outscored its opponents 10-1 and has outshot its opponents in all three contests, owning a 63-29 edge over that span.
Â
CSUN hits the road for a matchup at Fresno State on Friday, September 4. Kickoff is slated for a 7 p.m. start time.
