Gonzalez, Morley Named Big West Players of the Week
En Español
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Fresh off a pair of road victories against West Coast Conference opponents, CSUN men's soccer seniors Carlos Gonzalez and Trevor Morley were named Big West Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, the league office announced Monday. Gonzalez recorded a hat trick in the Matadors' win against Saint Mary's while Morley scored a penalty kick in each game for his first two career goals.Â
"When a team does well, individuals tend to get recognized. This weekend, Carlos and Trevor were part of a great team effort and are deserving of the recognition," CSUN head coach Terry Davila said.Â
Gonzalez scored three goals in just 29 minutes off the bench in the victory at Saint Mary's on Sept. 18. Originally from San Fernando, CA, Gonzalez scored a pair of goals over a 24-second span in the 32nd minute to give CSUN a 3-1 lead at the time. He added his third goal of the match in the 88th minute to finish off the hat trick.Â
"It is a pretty amazing feeling to win the award because this was the first hat trick I have ever produced," Gonzalez said. "The first goal came on a nice cross from Dean Wright and on the second one, I was there just to tap it in the net. On the third goal, I was sprinting up the middle and saw the gap open as David Turcios made a nice cut in with the ball. He slid me the pass and I was on my own with the goalkeeper, just wanting to get that third goal."Â
The goals were his first since his freshman year in 2012 when he recorded a goal and an assist. Gonzalez now leads the Matadors with three goals and six points on the season. Gonzalez is tied for sixth in points and tied for third in goals among all Big West Conference players.
Morley was called upon twice to convert from the penalty spot and the captain from San Diego did just that in wins over Saint Mary's and Santa Clara. Against the Gaels, Morley scored his first career goal in the 26th minute and tied the match at 1-1. Two days later, he scored the game-winning goal from the spot in the 66th minute in the victory over the Broncos. He is tied for eighth with two goals among all Big West players and tied for ninth with five points.
"I think the weekend was a product of some trial and error in past games and a lot of work on the training field," Morley said. "To get my first college goal was a dream come true and means so much to me. I have waited four-plus years for it and I am proud to have the responsibility to take the spot kick for my team. This is something I am very proud of, but none of this would be possible without the work and effort of my team. They definitely deserve a lot of this award."Â
Morley also helped anchor a stout CSUN defense that held the two opponents to just one goal in 180 minutes of action. CSUN has now held its opponents to just one goal in the run of the play over its last 412 minutes of action. Having appeared in every match since the start of the 2012 season, Morley has now been a part of 40 victories and 23 shutouts as a Matador.Â
The pair of road wins also gave CSUN its 26th and 27th road or neutral-site victories since the start of the 2010 season, the second-most among all Big West Conference squads.Â
Gonzalez, Morley and the Matadors return to action Friday, Sept. 25 with a 7:30 p.m. match at San Diego. The contest is part of a CSUN-USD doubleheader with the women's programs meeting at 5 p.m.
