Matadors Met Nationally Ranked Cal and Saint Mary's in Berkeley
BERKELEY, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (0-2) lost 4-0 to both No. 6 California and No. 44 Saint Mary's Sunday in a rain-delayed ITA Kickoff Weekend. Having withstood mother nature for three days, the teams were able to get to the court twice on Sunday and the Matadors were able to get some early experience against some top competition.
Originally slated to play Friday and Saturday, the Matadors crammed in two matches Sunday against nationally ranked opponents. Head Coach Gary Victor was happy with the way the team competed and the lessons the top competition offered.
"We competed well, but still have a lot to learn this season, " Victor said. "Cal and Saint Mary's are two very good programs who tested us. Vivian Lin was ahead in the second set of her singles match before it was stopped, so that was a solid performance. Against Saint Mary's, Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei rallied from down 4-1 to go ahead 6-5 before ultimately falling in a tiebreaker. This was an invitation based on our performance last year and will serve us well because of the quality of competition we tested ourselves against today."Â
Against Cal, CSUN's top doubles duo of Hsu and Poei faced one of their toughest tests in two-plus seasons playing together. The tandem lost 6-1 in no-advantage doubles to the No. 3 doubles team in the nation and the top duo for the Golden Bears. Sophomore Kiryang Kim and junior Mari Taslagyan won two games in their No. 3 match before it was stopped due because the doubles point had already been clinched.Â
In singles action against the host Golden Bears, Lin was leading 4-2 in the second set of her No. 2 singles contest when the match was stopped because Cal had clinched the victory. In her first career singles match as a Matador, freshman Skyla Alcon won three games in a straight-set defeat at the No. 4 match before it was halted.Â
In the afternoon meeting with the Gaels, a program that has advanced to six of the last seven NCAA Tournaments, the Matadors turned in some solid performances. Lin and Alcon captured the Matadors' first victory of the season with a 6-3 victory in the No. 2 doubles draw. Hsu and Poei nearly completed a stirring comeback in their top draw before succumbing in a tiebreaker.Â
In singles, Lin won a total of seven games in the top draw and Taslagyan captured three games in the No. 6 draw. On the day, both Poei and Alcon had their singles draws stopped before completion due to the match winners having already been assured.Â
The Matadors return to action on Saturday, Jan. 30 with their 2015 home opener, a meeting with Loyola Marymount. First serve is slated from Matador Tennis Complex for 11 a.m.Â
