Juniors Hsu, Poei and Taslagyan Score Critical Points for Matadors
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (1-2) picked up its first win of the season with a 4-3 victory over Loyola Marymount Saturday morning in a non-conference match at Matador Tennis Complex. Juniors Mickey Hsu, Kristen Poei and Mari Taslagyan scored crucial points for the Matadors in both doubles and singles to help lift the Matadors past the visiting Lions.Â
CSUN's junior class had a strong day for the Matadors and head coach Gary Victor. Down 3-1, Taslagyan won in straight sets in the sixth draw to spark a comeback that saw Hsu win a pair of tiebreakers and Poei complete a three-set victory.Â
"Today was a tough match against an extremely talented team," Victor said. "We are very happy for Mari to see all her hard work come to fruition and she and Kiryang Kim were much better in doubles this weekend. All three of our doubles teams look better each time they take the court and Mickey and Kristen earned a hard-fought victory against a strong team."
In doubles, Hsu and Poei picked up their first win of the season with a 6-2 victory in the top draw. At No. 3, Kim and Taslagyan posted a 6-3 decision.Â
Singles action saw LMU win in straight sets at the second, third and fourth draw. Taslagyan then finished off a 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 6 match to get CSUN back into the match.
Hsu posted a straight-set victory but a match-deciding 13th game had to be played in both sets. Poei then completed the CSUN comeback with a resounding victory in the third and final set of her fifth draw.Â
CSUN returns to action on Friday, Feb. 5 with a 1 p.m. home match against Long Beach State at Matador Tennis Complex.Â
