Matadors Secure Important Road Victory at UC Riverside

Junior Jeremy Degraffenreidt Scores First Goal of the Year in Second Half
RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (6-6-3, 3-2-2 BWC) picked up an important three points in the Big West Conference South Division standings with a 1-0 victory at UC Riverside Wednesday night in a Big West match at Riverside Soccer Stadium. Jeremy Degraffenreidt broke a scoreless tie in the 76th minute off a feed from Stuart Close, Kevin Marquez made three saves and the Matadors defeated the Highlanders in Riverside for the second-straight season.Â
Facing the South Division leaders, CSUN struck for an important victory to narrow the gap in the standings. With the win, the Matadors improve to 3-2-2 (11 points) in the Big West, trailing UC Riverside at 4-2-1 (13 points). In the other division contest Wednesday night, Cal State Fullerton won 3-1 at home over rival UC Irvine. The Big West standings are now:
1. UC Riverside 4-2-1 (13 points)
2. CSUN 3-2-2 (11 points)
3. Cal State Fullerton 3-3-1 (10 points)
4. UC Irvine 2-5-0 (six points)
Scoreless in the 76th minute, Degraffenreidt took a pass up the middle from Close and chipped the ball over a charging UCR goalkeeper for his first goal of the season and second of his CSUN career. Close recorded his second career assist, both of which have come at UC Riverside. Â
In net, Marquez finished with three stops, including one after Degraffenreidt's goal, to earn his second career shutout. He also saved a header in the sixth minute, a shot in the 45th minute and successfully defended three corner kicks. Seniors Patrick Hickman, Juan Fernando Samayoa and Gabe Robinson all played the full 90 minutes as did sophomore Andrew Rizeq.Â
Robinson led the Matadors with three shots and had a header attempt saved in the first half. Samuel Dadzie had two shots and Papi Diouf nearly doubled the Matadors' lead with a pair of attempts in the 89th minute, but both shots were saved. The Matadors finished with a 10-8 advantage in shots and had five corner kicks.Â
The Matadors return to action with an important home contest against UC Irvine on Saturday, Oct. 22. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. from Matador Soccer Field. In the final week of the regular season, CSUN travels to Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, Oct. 26 and then hosts UC Riverside on Senior Night on Saturday, Oct. 29.Â
