NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (7-6-3, 4-2-2 BWC) defeated UC Irvine 3-1 Saturday evening in a pivotal Big West Tournament match at Matador Soccer Field. Seniors led the way for CSUN all night as Patrick Hickman, Shane Steffes and Juan Fernando Samayoa all scored a goal and Kevin Marquez made six saves in net as the Matadors toppled the Anteaters to clinch a berth in the Big West Tournament.
The victory over the Anteaters moves CSUN to the top of the Big West South Division with 14 points. Cal State Fullerton won 1-0 at UC Riverside in the other South Division game Saturday, leaving both squads with 13 points at the end of the night. Here are the updated standings with all teams having two final games next week to conclude the regular season:
1. CSUN 4-2-2 (14 points)
2. CSUF 4-3-1 (13 points)
2. UCR 4-3-1 (13 points)
4. UCI 2-5-0 (6 points)
Hickman opened the scoring at the end of the 16th minute, heading home a free kick from Samayoa at the right post. Hickman now has a career-high three goals and six points on the season. The teams went to halftime with CSUN holding the 1-0 advantage as Marquez made three saves over the opening 45 minutes.
In the second half, the teams increased the physicality and several tough challenges were exchanged early in the frame. CSUN doubled its lead through Steffes in the 76th minute as the senior scored his first career goal.
Emmanuel Usen Jr. passed the ball to Samayoa, who then sent in a cross that Steffes finished on the volley with a jumping strike past the UCI goalkeeper. The assist was Usen Jr.'s fourth of the season while Samayoa now has six helpers on the year.
Needing a win to stay alive for a Big West Tournament berth, UCI cut the lead in half in the 84th minute. Ivan Canales crossed a ball into the 18-yard box that Giovanni Godoy placed neatly inside the left post for his third goal of the year.
The Matadors protected the lead for the next five minutes and then put the contest away on a free kick from Samayoa. From roughly 25 yards from goal, Samayoa drilled a low line drive inside the right post for his sixth goal of the year. He now has seven goals, 12 assists and 26 points in his CSUN career.
Marquez came up big to preserve the three points and also keep CSUN undefeated (4-0-2) at Matador Soccer Field this season. He posted six saves on the night, three in each half, and his biggest stop of the night came in the 87th minute as he punched away a driving shot from Godoy. Marquez has 82 saves and a .788 save percentage on the season.
UC Irvine finished with 13 shots compared to nine for CSUN. The Matadors successfully repelled six Anteater corner kicks and the teams combined for 26 fouls with CSUN being whistled for an infraction 15 times. Darion Mealing saw a yellow card for CSUN in the first half.
The Matadors close out the regular season next week with a pair of important games. On Wednesday, Oct. 26, CSUN travels to Orange County to face Cal State Fullerton at Titan Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Then on Saturday, Oct. 29, the Matadors host UC Riverside on Senior Night at Matador Soccer Field in a 7 p.m. contest.
