NORTHRIDGE, CA---
A goal in the 104th minute of play proved to the difference in CSUN Women's Soccer's (5-3-5, 0-1-1 BWC) 2-1 loss to Long Beach State (5-5-2, 1-0-1 BWC) on Sunday evening at George Allen Field. Taylor Hobson netted her first goal of the season in the first half while Cynthia Sanchez led the team in shot attempts with four. Goalkeeper Jovani McCaskill tied a career high with nine saves in net.Â
The Matadors played their sixth double overtime match in 13 games this season on Sunday but unlike the previous five, a goal would come in the overtime sessions. After battling the 49ers to over 100 minutes of back-and-forth play, Long Beach State picked up the deciding goal to claim the Big West Conference match.Â
The two teams played to a stalemate early on. After McCaskill saved three shots in the first nine minutes of play, the Matadors answered back with a series of shot attempts on the Long Beach State goal. Both Sanchez and Nicole Thompson forced goalkeeper Ashton McKeown to make a pair of saves to keep the game scoreless.
The match remained 0-0 until the 42nd minute as the senior tandem of Hobson and Thompson teamed up to give CSUN the lead. Utilizing a header from Thompson, Hobson gathered the pass and hit the net with a shot on the right side.Â
The Matador defense posted another scoreless half after blocking a Mackenzie Magaoay attempt in the final minute of the period.Â
Trailing by a goal, Long Beach State pressed in the early portion of the second half in an attempt to look for the equalizer. McCaskill saved attempts from Jessica Vincent and Ashley Gonzales while Mimi Akaogi shot wide of the net.Â
Shortly after Sylvia Trinh posted a shot on target, the 49ers hit the game-tying goal in the 67th minute. Off an entry pass from Mimi Rangel, Gonzales headed a shot over McCaskill and into the net.Â
Both sides would have looks at the net for the remainder of the half as each team posted three shots, however after 90 minutes, the game remained deadlocked at 1-1.Â
The Matadors held a narrow 4-3 edge in shots in the first overtime as Camille Watson had two attempts. McCaskill made her eighth and ninth saves in the period including a stab in the 97th minute.Â
After 100 minutes of hard fought play, the match entered a second 10-minute overtime session.Â
Following a CSUN foul at the 103:04 mark of the match, the game would be decided on a free kick. Receiving the free shot, Vincent knocked in the game winner just out of the reach of McCaskill to lift the 49ers to victory.Â
In the match, Long Beach State registered a 20-18 advantage in shots and an 11-7 edge in shots on goal. CSUN led the way in corner kicks, 4-3, while the 49ers committed 10 fouls to the Matadors' nine. Amanda Martin, Kyla Diekmann, Hobson and LBSU's Allie Emmons all saw yellow cards on Sunday.Â
Hobson pushed her career goal total to five on Sunday and she became the ninth different Matador to find the net on the season.Â
The Matadors continue their three-match road trip on Thursday with a contest at UC Santa Barbara at 5 p.m.Â
