CSUN Maintains Big West South Lead with Draw at Cal State Fullerton

Titan Own-Goal in 66th Minute Gives CSUN Important Point
FULLERTON, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (7-6-4, 4-2-3 BWC) earned a 1-1 draw at Cal State Fullerton Wednesday night in a Big West Conference match at Titan Stadium. Freshman Samuel Dadzie and senior Gabe Robinson combined in the 66th minute to force a CSF own-goal to level the match and senior Kevin Marquez made five saves as the Matadors maintained a one-point lead over the Titans for first place in the Big West South Division.
The Matadors and Titans played to a 1-1 draw on Oct. 12 in the San Fernando Valley and duplicated the performance Wednesday night in Orange County. Just as in the first game, CSUN overcame an early Cal State Fullerton goal, found an equalizer and walked away with an important point.
The draw, coupled with a 2-1 UC Irvine victory over UC Riverside, gives CSUN a one-point lead in the Big West South Division with one game remaining. UC Riverside will come to the San Fernando Valley while Cal State Fullerton visits UC Irvine on Saturday, Oct. 29. Both matches will start at 7 p.m. Here are the updated Big West South Division standings:
1. CSUN 4-2-3 (15 points)
2. CSUF 4-3-2 (14 points)
3. UCR 4-4-1 (13 points)
4. UC Irvine 3-6 (Nine Points)
After video review, the Matadors' score was changed to an own-goal off the head of the Titans' Alex Heilmann in the 66th minute. Initially, the goal was credited CSUN's Samuel Dadzie as he and Heilmann met at the near post off a long throw-in from Robinson. On the ensuing play, Heilmann directed the ball into his own net and tied the match.
The Matadors trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes when Robert Coronado connected with Corentin Ohlmann off a corner kick to give the Titans the early advantage. CSUN held a 6-5 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes and forced three saves. Jeremy Degraffenreidt had a good look at a header but put it right into the hands of the goalkeeper and Darion Mealing and Patrick Hickman each had attempts on goal.
Marquez made all five of his stops over the final 65 minutes of the match and faced six shots in the 20 minutes of overtime. He had two saves in the first extra period, added a stop in the second and now has 87 for the season. That total ties for the sixth-most in a single season in program history and the most by a CSUN goalkeeper since the 2003 season.
The Titans carried a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks and both teams committed 14 fouls. Juan Fernando Samayoa and Shane Steffes each saw a yellow card for CSUN.
Before Saturday's contest with the Highlanders, the Matadors will honor their six seniors participating in their final regular season match at Matador Soccer Field: Robinson, Hickman, Marquez, Steffes, Richard Martinez and Joel Luis Juan.
