CSUN Turns in Solid Showing at ITA Southwest Regionals

Sophomore Elisa Elhadj Reaches Round of 16 i

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team had some solid performances at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships on the campus of San Diego State this past weekend. Sophomore Elisa Elhadj reached the Round of 16 in her first time at the event, defeating opponents from Long Beach State, Pepperdine and UC Santa Barbara in singles competition.Â
Originally from Switzerland, Elhadj made an instant impression on her regional rivals with her strong weekend. She defeated LBSU's Lena Pacholski 7-5 and 6-2 in the opening round and then rallied from a set down to topple Laura Gulbe, the No. 8 seed from Pepperdine, 1-6, 6-2 and 6-4.Â
From there, she then defeated Natalie DaSilveira in three sets in the round of 32, yet again overcoming a first-set loss to win 6-7, 7-5 and 6-4. Ultimately, she fell to Zoe Katz of USC in the Quarterfinals to end her run in the event.Â
Kiryang Kim also scored an impressive victory, knocking off Marie Van Aeist of Arizona 7-5, 7-5 in the opening round of the event. Mickey Hsu also had an opening-round victory, defeating Cal State Fullerton's Masako Makiba 6-1 and 6-3.Â
In doubles, Hsu and Kristen Poei toppled a tandem from San Diego State 8-6 in the round of 32 before being eliminated by a duo from Hawai'i in the Round of 32. Kim and Emma Roenholt also earned a win in doubles play, defeating another tandem from San Diego State 8-6 in the Round of 64.Â
Other action from the weekend saw Skyla Alcon and Roenholt earn singles victories in sign-up matches, defeating oppoennts from UC Riverside and San Diego State respectively. In another sign-up match, Kim toppled a rival from USC to give her another impressive singles win. Mari Udagawa also won a singles match in sign-up play, defeating an opponent from San Diego State. Additional doubles play saw Udagawa and Alcon defeat a duo from Grand Canyon.Â
The Matadors host their annual CSUN Fall Invitational from Nov. 11-13 at Matador Tennis Complex. Admission to the event is free and the weekend will feature several local and regional Division I programs.Â
