NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN women's volleyball team dropped its fourth match at home this season as UC Davis topped the Matadors Friday evening in The Matadome.
Set scores were 27-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-20 as the Matadors fell to 6-15 overall and 2-7 in the Big West Conference.
After a tight 27-25 first set loss, the Matadors rallied to win a 25-23 second set. The Aggies' offensive errors and a big set for CSUN senior Julie Haake, who had eight kills, led to a victorious second set for the Matadors.
Haake would add 12 more kills for a team-leading total of 20 for the night, followed by sophomore Aeryn Owens with 14 and freshman Melissa Eaglin who put up 11 for the Matadors. But as the night went on, the Aggies' height and blocking controlled the match and thwarted CSUN's offensive efforts.
"We need to sustain our better play for longer periods of time; we're a team that's growing," commented CSUN head coach Jeff Stork. "Set one and two were tight and we've seen a lot of those over the season. With all the modifications we've been doing, we're seeing ourselves play better and better as the season wears on."
The Aggies came back aggressive in the third set and defeated CSUN 25-15. UC Davis never trailed in the set while hitting a robust .406. A decisive 25-20 fourth set sealed the victory for the visitors and ruined any chance of the Matadors first home victory of the season.
Despite the loss, Stork is seeing progress in the Matadors' quality of play.
"This team is making strides, it's improving. We're hitting better than we were in the beginning of this season, point scoring better and minimizing our errors," added Stork.
The Matadors continue their three-match homestand and look for their first win in The Matadome Saturday night against UC Irvine at 7 p.m.
