Matadors Four Back at Santa Clara Colby Invitational

NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN women's golf team posted its low 36-hole total of the season Monday and is in second place by four shots heading into the final round of the Santa Clara Colby Invitational at Silver Creek Valley Country Club.
The Matadors, whose previous low was 617 at the Hobble Creek Invitational, finished Monday's two rounds at 612 (311-301). Host Santa Clara leads the seven-team field as the Broncos hold the team lead at 608 (309-297).
Sophomore Cake Phuchanbanchob is currently in second place at three-over 147 following rounds of 74-73. Phuchanbanchob, who trails leader Kristin Le of Santa Clara by four shots through 36 holes, was fifth after an opening round 74 but a second round one-over 73 vaulted her into second ahead of teammate Ysabel Tran. The sophomore had seven birdies and 20 pars on Monday.
Tran shared second place after a first round one-over 73 but slipped one place on the leaderboard following a four-over 76 in the second round. Shenna DeLeon made it three Matadors in the top 11 as she posted rounds of 78-77 and sits 11th at 11-over 155.
Freshman Alice Duan struggled to an opening round 86 before rebounding with a second round three-over 75 to move up from 33rd into a tie for 21st at 17-over 161. Fellow freshman Brianna Steger is tied for 31st at 23-over 167 (86-81) and Chaiwon Youn, competing as an individial is 40th at 31-over 175 (89-86).
"All the girls did a great job contributing today," said head coach Gina Umeck. "We've done a lot of things differently in practices but our approach as a staff has changed. We have shifted to a more holistic approach, less on golf technical points and more on carrying a good attitude and resilient mentality."
The Matadors tee off the final round Tuesday at 8:15 a.m.
