Phuchanbanchob Earns First Win, CSUN Second at Colby Invitational

NORTHRIDGE, CA - Sophomore Cake Phuchanbanchob posted her first career win and the CSUN women's golf team closed the fall portion of the 2016-17 schedule with a solid second place finish Tuesday at the Colby Invitational at Silver Creek Valley Country Club.
Phuchanbanchob, who opened the day in second place, fired a four-over 76 to overtake day one leader Kristin Le of Santa Clara. The CSUN sophomore carded four birdies and eight pars in the final round to capture her first collegiate tournament by two shots. Phuchanbanchob wound up at seven-over 223 for the tournament.
Sophomore Ysabel Tran also closed with a 76 on Tuesday to share second place with Le at nine-over 225. Tran had a single birdie on Tuesday but countered with 12 pars as she posted her second top 10 finish of the season. She also has a top 20 showing at the Hobble Creek Classic.
"Very proud of the team today," said head coach Gina Umeck. "Cake but especially Ysabel showed great leadership today."
As a team, the Matadors nearly overcame a four shot deficit as they finished within two shots of host Santa Clara. CSUN posted a final round 306 to finish the tournament at 918 while the Broncos finished at 916.
"We have a lot of respect for Santa Clara's team, and to be within two of them on their home course in unequivocally an achievement," added Umeck.
Junior Shenna DeLeon notched her second top 20 finish of the fall as she carded a final round 79 to finish the tournament tied for 12th at 18-over 234. Freshman Alice Duan made it four Matadors in the top 15 as she fired a final round three-over 75 to move up six spots, finishing tied for 15th at 20-over 236. Freshman Brianna Steger had her best round Tuesday as she followed up rounds of 86-81 with an eight-over 80 to finish 27th at 31-over 247.
Chaiwon Youn, competing as an individual, rounded out the CSUN scoring as she finished 40th at 46-over 262 (89-86-87).
