No. 12 Hawai'i Overpowers Matadors in 3-0 Win
10/6/2016 9:46:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, CA - The 12th-ranked Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine handed the CSUN Matadors their third consecutive home loss Thursday, sweeping the Matadors 25-14, 25-15, 25-15 in front of 1,090 fans in The Matadome.
CSUN (6-11, 2-3 Big West) looked to pick up their first home win of the season but the Hawai'i had other plans as the visitors held the Matadors to a collective -.040 hitting clip.
"Offensively we weren't on all cylinders by any stretch but Hawai'i is a good team," said CSUN head coach Jeff Stork. "Having five kills in both the second and third sets, there's not much to talk about there. I thought we improved on some things in the gym during practice this week but they exposed some other things that we need to improve on."
Sophomore Aeryn Owens had six kills to pace the Matadors who also got five kills and five blocks from Julie Haake who was the lone CSUN hitter to hit above .000. With setter Lauren Conati sidelined with an injury, Maddie Leiphardt and Kamalu Makekau-Whittaker combined for 15 assists.
Katie Sato had a team-high 13 digs and Erin Indermill served two of the Matadors' three aces. Nada Dragovic chipped in four kills and seven digs in the loss.
The Matadors trailed by one at 5-4 in the opening set when the Rainbow Wahine put together a 6-0 run to open up an 11-4 cushion. Kills from Melissa Eaglin and Owens temporarily trimmed the lead to 11-6 but CSUN would get no closer the remainder of the set.
The Matadors got off to a good start in set two as Haake's kill snapped a 2-2 and sent CSUN on a 4-0 run. The Matadors still led by three (8-5) following an Indermill ace but the Rainbow Wahine took advantage of four CSUN hitting errors to take a 10-8 lead. A Hawai'i hitting error pulled the Matadors even at 11-11 when the visitors took control of the set with a decisive 7-1 run.
CSUN led as late as 10-9 in the final set when Makekau-Whittaker and Haake teamed up to stuff a Rainbow Wahine attack. But again, Hawai'i put together a sizable run, this time 5-0, to take control. Leading 16-12, the Rainbow Wahine put to set out of reach with a 6-0 run.
Nikki Taylor led all hitters in the match with 13 kills (.290) as Hawai'i improved to 12-4 overall and 5-0 in conference play.
CSUN opens up a three-match road trip a week from Saturday (Oct. 15) as the Matadors travel to Long Beach State at 7 p.m.
