NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN women's volleyball fell in straight sets (25-9, 25-14, 25-16) Saturday to No. 15 Hawai'i at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Sophomore Aeryn Owens led the Matadors (8-16, 4-8 Big West) with 10 kills and eight digs while freshman Morgan Salone added seven kills on .462 hitting. Senior Julie Haake also had seven kills (.190) but CSUN remained winless in Hawai'i in 13 tries.
The Matadors were limited to a team hitting clip of .118 (29-18-93) while the host Rainbow Wahine hit .471 (46-6-85) in improving to 18-5 overall and 11-1 in conference play.
The hosts bolted to an 11-4 lead in the opening set and were never threatened. A pair of CSUN overpasses capped a 4-0 Rainbow Wahine which extended the Hawai'i lead to 18-6 and Haake's hitting error on set point made the final 25-9.
Lauren Conati's ace kept CSUN within striking distance at 8-7 in set two when Hawai'i put together another 4-0 run to open up a 12-7 lead. A Nada Dragovic kill pulled the Matadors within 13-9 but the hosts quickly built the lead to 12 on the strength of an 8-0 run. Down 24-13, Owens' kill saved one set point before the Rainbow Wahine took a two-set lead winning 25-14.
Owens gave the Matadors their largest lead of the match, 5-3 early in the final set. CSUN stayed even with Hawai'i after another Owens kill knotted the score at 7-7. But an 8-2 Hawai'i run boosted the lead to 15-9 and the Matadors could only get within four points to rest of the way.
Annie Mitchem led Hawai'i with a match-high 12 kills on .385 hitting.
CSUN continues on the road next week as the Matadors travel to Cal State Fullerton Tuesday before hosting Long Beach State on Saturday.
