Matadors Top Cal State Fullerton in Four Sets

NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN women's volleyball won for the third time in its last four matches Tuesday as the Matadors held off Cal State Fullerton in four sets (25-18, 25-10, 21-25, 25-16) at Titan Gym.
With the win, CSUN improved to 9-16 overall and and 5-8 in the Big West Conference.
For the third time in the last four matches, Julie Haake and Aeryn Owens each had 14 kills to lead the Matadors. Haake hit .323 on 31 swings while Owens hit .200 on 40 attacks. Haake also had a solo block while Owens had one ace as each scored 15 points.
Redshirt freshman Melissa Eaglin added nine kills and five blocks on .412 hitting while freshman Morgan Salone (.545) and Nickeisha Williams (.312) each chipped in seven kills. Junior setter Lauren Conati posted 43 assists as CSUN hit .285 (52-17-123) as a team while the Matadors limited the host Titans to an .057 (40-32-141) hitting clip.
Each team had six aces as Kristey Markle and Maddie Leiphardt had two each for CSUN. The Matadors had a 63-51 edge in digs as Katie Sato had a match-high 18.
CSUN won the first two sets handily by the scores of 25-18 and 25-10. The Matadors had 29 kills on .436 hitting while committing just five hitting errors in dominating the first two frames.
The homestanding Titans turned the tables in set three. The Matadors didn't help themselves committing more errors than kills while hitting .083 in the set.
But as was the case in set two, CSUN jumped out to big leads of 7-1 and 16-11 before holding off a late Fullerton surge in the final set. After the Titans closed to within 16-14, the Matadors took advantage of a pair of Fullerton hitting errors and a pair of Haake kills to reclaim a 20-14 lead.
The CSUN lead was still six (22-16) when Haake connected followed by consecutive Owens kills gave the Matadors a 25-16 win and a their first four-set win of the season.
Madeline Schneider led the Titans (6-20, 1-11 Big West) with 12 kills.
CSUN returns home Saturday to host Long Beach State at 7 p.m.
