Veteran Broadcaster Handled Several Matador Games This Season
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Veteran radio play-by-play announcer Mark Roberts enjoyed his time working with the CSUN women's basketball program, serving as the voice of the Matadors for several important games this season. With over 20 years of experience behind the microphone, things came full circle for Roberts in 2015-16 as he called games for CSUN head coach Jason Flowers, someone whom he also covered as a player.Â
"It was exciting to watch Jason play. He was a charismatic player who could explode at any time," Roberts said of the sixth-year CSUN head coach and two-year letterwinner at UC Irvine. "Now you see so much self control as a coach, but what is the same is his intelligence. He is a student of the game and able to take information and apply it properly. He's built himself a small dynasty."Â
Roberts did a total of six games for CSUN this season, all of which came against Big West competition. He was on the call for two big Matador home victories: a 63-60 decision over Hawai'i and a 62-48 victory over UC Irvine. The victory against the Rainbow Wahine halted an eight-game losing streak for the Matadors while the UC Irvine game was CSUN's Play 4 Kay game to support breast cancer awareness.Â
"Mark has done a great job for our program this season. He is a true professional and is genuinely a good person who has brought a lot to the broadcast due to his work ethic," CSUN head coach Jason Flowers said. "He brings a wealth of experience and is a true professional who takes his work seriously. That is evident in his delivery and broadcast and we are grateful for his work this season."Â
In his time covering the Matadors, Roberts came away impressed with the future of the program.Â
"It is amazing to see the progress of Channon Fluker. We have all seen it. She has a chance to be a player that 20 years from now, the conference is still talking about her and using her achievements as a measuring stick. All of them have improved throughout the season and the future of this program is very bright."
Roberts came to CSUN after 20-consecutive years covering UC Irvine men's basketball with a six-year stint covering the Anteaters' women's hoops team as well. He still covers baseball for the Anteaters and everywhere he and the Matadors went this season, he was greeted with warmth by the opposing team's radio voices. That included Dave Grant (Cal Poly), Don Ford (UCSB), David Gascon (UC Riverside) and Darren Preston (UC Irvine) and the Matadors' own Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister.Â
"It has been a pleasure working with the coaching staff at CSUN, from Jason to Mario and Lindsey who came and did post-game interviews with me," Roberts added. "The staff has been so accommodating to me and helpful making me feel comfortable. I am very appreciative for the opportunity and think CSUN has done a wonderful job in helping me get back on the air for basketball."Â
Although Roberts is not slated to be on the air any more this season, there is a chance he could make a guest appearance at the opening rounds of the Big West Tournament, which will be played at UC Irvine on Tuesday, March 8 and Wednesday, Mar. 9.Â
