Savannah Horvath Collects Six Hits on the Day
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (12-11) lost 6-4 to Grand Canyon and 6-5 to Toledo Thursday afternoon in a pair of games as part of the Matador Classic at Matador Diamond. Sophomore Savannah Horvath had six hits on the day and junior Katie Hooper hit her 23rd career home run, but defensive errors proved decisive in both contests as the Matadors fell to the Antelopes and Rockets.Â
In all, CSUN committed eight errors in the field in Thursday's two games with five coming against the Rockets (3-14). Only three of the Rockets' six runs were earned as the defense and pitching still limited Toledo to just one run in each of the first six innings.Â
The Matadors got a run in the bottom of the first and the sixth and entered the seventh needing a big comeback. Horvath and Taylor Glover both reached in front of Hooper, who launched her fourth home run of the season over the fence in left field to draw CSUN to within one at 6-5. Karlie Habitz then doubled to center to put the tying run in scoring position, but she was stranded to end the game.Â
Horvath finished 3-for-4 at the plate to tie a season high for the second time on the day and third time this season. Hooper had a season-high three hits, including her 29th career double, and matched a season best with four RBIs. Ariana Wassmer and Taylor Glover each had two hits and Glover scored two runs to move into sixth in program history with 106 for her career.Â
In the circle. Katie Chenault (3-1) tossed the first three innings for CSUN, taking the loss after allowing two earned runs on four walks and two hits. Rebecca Bell went the final four innings and allowed three runs, one earned, on three hits and a walk.
CSUN's first game of the day boiled down to a successful pinch-hit from the Antelopes (18-7). The Matadors entered the seventh leading 3-2 after Horvath blasted a two-run home run, her team-leading sixth of the season, Â in the bottom of the sixth.Â
However, Daphne Pofek (6-3) ran into trouble in the seventh inning. The first two batters singled and with runners on first and second, a fielder's choice to the pitcher failed to produce an out and loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly tied the game and with two outs, Grand Canyon cleared the bases with a double to take a 6-3 lead.Â
In the seventh, Haileigh Gonzalez led off the inning with a triple and scored on an RBI groundout from Tara Kliebenstein. However, CSUN could not sustain the rally and fell to the Antelopes.Â
Horvath finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. She leads the team with 10 doubles and 25 runs scored on the season. Kliebenstein had the other Matador hit and Taylor Nate stole her fifth base of the season.Â
In the circle, Pofek went all seven innings and allowed eight hits, five earned runs and three walks. She finished with two strikeouts in the loss.Â
CSUN will look to rebound with a 3:30 p.m. game against No. 24 Oregon State Friday. The two teams are also scheduled to play at the same time on Saturday and CSUN closes out its time in the tournament against San Diego at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. A complete tournament schedule can be found here.Â
