Matadors Continue Homestand with Five-Team Tournament

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (12-9) hosts the Matador Classic from Mar. 10-13 at Matador Diamond, bringing in the San Diego Toreros, the No. 24 Oregon State Beavers, the Grand Canyon Antelopes and the Toledo Rockets to the San Fernando Valley for four days of softball. CSUN will take on Grand Canyon and Toledo on Thursday, Mar. 10 and then face No. 24 Oregon State on both Friday, Mar. 11 and Saturday, Mar. 12. On Sunday, Mar. 13, the Matadors wrap up the weekend with a 12:30 p.m. contest against San Diego. Brandon Marcus will be on the call for the games Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the CSUN Sports Network and live stats will be provided for all games at Matador Diamond. Sunday's game will against San Diego will also feature a live video stream with links available at GoMatadors.com. Last week, the Matadors went 4-2 in their opening six-game homestand. In the Stacy Winsberg Invitational, the Matadors posted wins over Syracuse, CSU Bakersfield and Charleston Southern and then added another win over the Buccaneers on Tuesday, Mar. 8. In Tuesday's victory, Savannah Horvath smacked a career-high two home runs to raise her season total to a team-high five while Katie Chenault wracked up a career-high 6.1 innings and seven strikeouts in the circle. Katie Hooper picked up two doubles over the six games to move into ninth in program history with 28 for her career and she also now stands in sixth with 106 career RBIs.Â
This week, CSUN continues its homestand with a host of talented teams. On Thursday, CSUN renews rivalries with Grand Canyon, a team that brings in a 16-7 overall record into the weekend. As a team, the Antelopes are batting .367 with 52 doubles, 18 home runs and 14 stolen bases in 23 games this season. In the circle, Grand Canyon carries a Team ERA of 3.26 with 106 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .254 in 146 innings of work. CSUN leads the all-time series 5-1, but lost the last contest between the two schools.Â
Toledo comes to Matador Diamond with a 3-13 overall record. As a club, the Rockets are batting .218 with 14 doubles, seven home runs and 19 stolen bases in 16 games this season. In the circle, Toledo sports a 6.55 Team ERA with 51 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .311 in 94 innings of work this season. The Matadors lead the all-time series 4-0 with Toledo and Thursday's meeting will be the first that did not occur at a neutral site.Â
No. 24 Oregon State enters the weekend with a 16-4-1 overall record. As a team, the Beavers are batting .359 with 42 doubles, 18 home runs and 34 stolen bases this season. In the circle, Oregon State boasts a team ERA of 2.30 with 152 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .195 in 137 innings of work this season. CSUN leads the all-time series 17-5-1 with Oregon State, but the Beavers posted a 6-2 victory at the Kajikawa Classic on the opening weekend of 2016.Â
The University of San Diego Toreros enter the week with an 8-12 overall record. As a team, USD is batting .304 with 26 doubles, eight triples and 11 home runs. In the circle, the Toreros boast a team ERA of 5.65 with 91 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .281 in 124 innings of work this season. CSUN leads the all-time series with San Diego 7-2 although the two sides have not met since the 2014 season and haven't played in Northridge since 2002.Â
