Matadors Visit No. 13 Bruins to Conclude Non-Conference Action

CSUN Faces UCLA Under the Lights at Easton Stadium

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team will play its final non-conference game of the 2016 season at No. 13 UCLA on Wednesday, April 13 at Easton Stadium with first pitch slated for 7 p.m. The Matadors enter the game with the Bruins with a 23-17 overall record and a 3-3 mark in Big West Conference play, tying for third in the league standings with three other clubs.Â
UCLA and CSUN will meet for the 53rd time in a series that dates back to 1979. CSUN's last victory in the series came in 2013, a 3-2 victory in which Tanna Bindi hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Matadors the walk-off victory. The Matadors' last win at UCLA came in 1995 when the teams split a doubleheader and CSUN prevailed 1-0 in game two.Â
The most recent meeting between the two schools came in the 2015 NCAA Tournament. The Bruins picked up a 9-1 victory over CSUN in both teams' postseason opener. Earlier in 2015, CSUN nearly scored an upset of UCLA at Matador Diamond, but the Bruins rallied late to take a 6-4 victory on Mar. 26.Â
This season, the Bruins (25-11-1) carry a loaded offense into Wednesday's contest. UCLA has hit 35 home runs, 48 doubles and eight triples in 36 games this season and owns a team on-base percentage of .426. Kylee Perez leads the Bruins with a .457 batting average while Allexis Bennett checks in at .441 for the season.Â
In the circle, UCLA sports a team ERA of 3.72 with 157 strikeouts and a .279 opponent batting average in 239 innings of work. Selina Ta'amilo and Johanna Grauer have seen the majority of time in the circle, although Paige McDuffee has appeared in six contests and made three starts.Â
For CSUN, the Matadors enter Wednesday's contest fresh off a 2-1 series victory over Hawai'i, the program's second-straight Big West series victory in Honolulu. Daphne Pofek pitched a pair of complete-game wins for CSUN while Ariana Wassmer and Taylor Glover blasted key home runs in the victories.Â
For the season, Wassmer has set a career high with six home runs to rank tied for third in the Big West Conference. She already has a career-high 24 RBIs this season and has tied a career high with three RBIs in three different games. She carries a .284 batting average and a .987 fielding percentage into Wednesday's contest.Â
Glover continues to have an excellent season in her junior campaign, ranking among the Big West's Top 10 in 10 different offensive categories. She leads the team with 27 RBIs and has cracked the Big West Conference's all-time Top 10 in career triples (T-10th, 14) and stolen bases (8th, 61).Â
After the two wins in Hawai'i, Pofek is 10-4 on the season with a 3.39 ERA and 56 Ks in 86.2 innings of work. She has held opponents to a .254 batting average and has six complete games in nine starts this season.Â
Savannah Horvath leads the team in runs scored (37), home runs (8) and stolen bases (16) while Karlie Habitz has six doubles, five home runs and 24 RBIs on the season. As a team, the Matadors have stolen 65 bases this season and lead the Big West with 78 stolen base attempts.
Following the game with UCLA Wednesday night, CSUN returns to Matador Diamond for a three-game Big West Conference series with UC Santa Barbara. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16 and a single game on Sunday, April 17 with both days slated for a 1 p.m. start.Â
