NORTHRIDGE, CA---

CSUN Baseball (31-19) fell for the second-straight day at Purdue (9-43) as a walk-off single in the 10th inning secured a 1-0 win for the Boilermakers on Friday evening at Alexander Field. Senior Angel Rodriguez turned in another quality effort on the mound, giving up only two hits over six shutout innings. While CSUN received strong pitching, the offense would be unable to get anything going against a Purdue pitching staff that held the Matadors to two hits on the night.

In a game where runs were hard to come by, the Matadors' Rodriguez and the Boilermakers' Matt Frawley engaged in a back-and-forth pitcher's duel. Over six-plus innings on the mound, only one base runner reached second base against Rodriguez while Frawley allowed two hits over 8.1 shutout innings.

Rodriguez got off to a perfect start, retiring the first nine batters of the ballgame until giving up a leadoff single in the fourth. On the flip side, Frawley was dominant as well in the early going, limiting the Matadors to only one base runner through four frames and no hits during that span.

In the fourth, Brett Carlson recorded the Boilermakers first hit with a single and he later advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Alec Olund. Pitching from the stretch for the first time of the evening, Rodriguez set down the next two batters in order to keep Purdue off the scoreboard.

CSUN threatened to break the scoreless tie in the fifth inning after Nolan Bumstead hit a one-out single and later moved up to second base on a balk with two outs. Nolan Flashman stepped to the plate and battled Frawley in a seven-pitch at bat before finally going down on strikes.

Entering the seventh, Rodriguez had retired eight-straight batters until Olund singled to lead off the frame. CSUN turned to its bullpen after the hit and Conner O'Neil entered the 0-0 game. The Matador stopper went to work striking out two batters while the team of Dylan Alexander and Yusuke Akitoshi tagged out Olund trying to move up to second base following a strikeout.

Meanwhile, the Matadors continued to have difficulty figuring out Frawley on the mound. After the Bumstead single in the fifth, Frawley retired 12-straight batters until giving up a walk in the ninth inning.

The Matadors finally knocked out Frawley in the top of the ninth after Fred Smith worked a one-out walk and Akitoshi singled to right to put runners at the corners. Following a pitching change on the mound, Branden Berry attempted a squeeze play but relief pitcher Tanner Andrews made a quick throw home to tag out Smith.

CSUN continued to pressure Purdue after the tag out, loading the bases on a Justin Toerner walk to bring up Alexander. Andrews would escape danger, however, on an Alexander ground ball that forced out Toerner at second base.

After nine and a half scoreless innings, Purdue picked up the key hit of the night in the bottom of the 10th. Two of the first three batters reached base against O'Neil to put runners at first and second base, giving Nick Dalesandro an opportunity to single in the winning run.

Receiving a no-decision in the contest, Rodriguez extended his string of excellent pitching. Over his last 35 innings of work, Rodriguez has posted a 2.06 ERA to go along with 26 strikeouts.

The Matadors continue their series with Purdue on Saturday afternoon at Alexander Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. PT.
