SIMI VALLEY, CA - The CSUN men's golf team posted a 290 in the second round of the Big West Championship Tuesday and sits fifth heading into the final round at Wood Ranch Golf Club.
CSUN (584) came into the day tied with a pair of teams in fourth place but UC Riverside (574) carded a tournament-low eight-under 280 to take over the team lead by six shots. The Matadors head into Wednesday's final round just 10 shots out of the lead and four shots out of second place.
"We're only 10 shots out, there's a lot of teams bunched up in the middle," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "If we can put together a good round tomorrow, we're certainly in a position to win the tournament."
Sophomore Luis Calderon has put together the best 36 holes of his collegiate career as he is tied for fourth after an impressive three-under 69 on Tuesday. Calderon had five birdies in round two to move up to fourth at one-under 143. The sophomore opened with a two-over 74 on Monday.
Two other CSUN Matadors are in the top six as junior Felix Mory and senior Tim Snyder are each tied for sixth at even-par 144. Mory (72-72) was one-under at the turn but a one-over 37 on his final nine holes dropped him to even. Snyder (71-73) was even after nine holes, then had a single bogey on the back nine to go with eight pars.
"We got a great round out of Luis and Tim and Felix both played solid," added Bracken. "Luis played really solid and is just two shots out of first. He's improved steadily this year and he's starting to play like he did when I recruited him. Felix missed a couple of short putts but he closed with birdie and Tim had a clutch 10-footer to save par on his last hole. My hope is we can put together another solid round tomorrow and put some heat on some teams."
Also for the Matadors, Tavit Garabedian is tied for 37th at nine-over 153 (77-76) and Sam Engel is tied for 43rd at 12-over 156 (79-77).
CSUN tees off the final round Wednesday morning at 7:30 off the No. 1 tee.
