NORTHRIDGE, CA - Former Matador Lynda Morales and her teamates from the Puerto Rico National Team will play in the Olympic Games for the first time this summer in Rio.
Following a straight-set (25-8, 25-23, 25-15) victory over Kenya on May 22, Puerto Rico earned the 12th and final berth in the Olympic tournament which opens Aug 6. Puerto Rico will join hosts Brazil, China, Serbia, Russia, Argentina, United States, Cameroon, Japan, Italy, Netherlands and South Korea in the 12-team field.
Against Kenya, the former Matador had seven points on four kills and three blocks. Morales, who started all three matches is the tournament at middle blcoker, also contributed eight points in a straight-set win over Colombia.Â
Morales, a four-year letterwinner for the Matadors from 2007-10, has recently enjoyed a successful Pan-American Games in Toronto last July with the national team. Morales and her Puerto Rico team held a two-set lead over eventual finalist Brazil in the semifinals before falling in five sets. Puerto Rico then fell to the Dominican Republic in four sets to finish fourth in the Championship bracket.
A member of the national team since 2011, Morales also began a professional playing career that season after graduating from CSUN. The first team she joined was Llaneras de Toa Baja in 2011 before moving to Mets de Guaynabo for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Morales has since played for Minas in Brazil (2013-14) and Besiktas in Istanbul, Turkey (2014-15) and recently returned to Puerto Rico to play for Criollas de Caguas.
