Point Guard Comes to Matadors after Accomplished Prep Career
NORTHRIDGE, CA ---
The CSUN women's basketball program has added point guard Hayley Tanabe to its 2016-17 roster, head coach Jason Flowers announced. Tanabe gives the Matadors five newcomers on the 2016-17 roster and comes to the San Fernando Valley after an accomplished prep career at West Torrance High School in Southern California.Â
"We are happy that Hayley has decided to join our program," Flowers said. "She is a tough competitive point guard who leads by example and makes her teammates better. She is a winner on the court, and in the classroom, who will definitely help us get closer to our goals."
A 5-4 point guard, Tanabe had an outstanding career at West Torrance High School. As a senior and team captain, she averaged 8.4 points, 3.1 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 2.9 steals per game and helped lead her team to a 26-8 overall record.
Tanabe came up clutch at the free throw line during her senior season to help lift West Torrance to its third straight trip to the CIF Southern Section final. She hit four free throws to seal a comeback win over Valencia in the CIF-SS Division 1AA quarterfinal and then added two more free throws late in the game in her team's semifinal victory over Redondo. While at West Torrance, Tanabe helped the squad win the Division 1A title in 2015 and the Division 2A championship in 2014.
For her career, she averaged 7.3 points, 2.3 assists, 2.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game in 125 career contests. She played all four of her high school seasons at the varsity level and finished with 131 career 3-pointers, including a career-high 49 as a sophomore.Â
Tanabe's addition gives CSUN five newcomers for the 2016-17 season. CSUN brought in a pair of incoming freshmen who signed NLIs in the early period during the fall of 2015. Lauren Shymkewicz is a 6-3 product from Ralston, NE while Eliza Matthews is a 6-1 local product from Long Beach Poly High School. Most recently, the Matadors added Australian guard Lizzie Tonks to give CSUN four international students on the roster and 5-8 guard Terrin Sullivan to the roster.Â
