Senior scores his first career goal in the 102nd minute for CSUN
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Senior Richard Martinez scored in the 102nd minute of action to lift the CSUN men's soccer team (2-1) to a 2-1, double-overtime victory over Air Force in Albuquerque, NM as part the of the TLC Plumbing and Utility Invitational on the campus of the University of New Mexico. Martinez provided the heroics for the Matadors after the Falcons tied the contest in the 89th minute.Â
Tied 1-1 in the opening minutes of the second and final extra period, Martinez delivered a quick shot from the right wing to register the first goal of his collegiate career. Nicholas Grinde picked up an assist on the play, which came off a scramble in front of net.
The win was CSUN's 32nd road or neutral-site victory since the start of the 2010 season and the Matadors have now won 18-straight games when scoring at least two goals, a streak that dates back to the 2013 campaign.Â
"I though we controlled the pace of the game and did a good job of putting them under pressure. We committed a silly foul late in the game and they produced so we didn't end regulation well," CSUN head coach Terry Davila said. "On Richard's goal, Grinde put Usen Jr. through into a 1-on-1 situation with the keeper, Usen's shot was saved, Grinde pounced on the rebound and fed it to Martinez, who used the inside of his right foot to find the side netting."Â
CSUN went ahead 1-0 midway through the second half on a goal from Grinde. The sophomore scored his second of the season in the 71st minute off a helper from Emmanuel Usen Jr. Air Force then forced overtime with a goal seconds into the 89th minute, scoring a header goal off a free kick.Â
In net, senior Kevin Marquez posted a season-high seven saves to earn his second victory of the season. Air Force carried a 16-13 advantage in shots for the contest, placing eight on frame. Freshman Bar Shem Tov led the Matadors with three shots, putting one on frame, while Papi Diouf, Usen Jr. and Grinde all had two attempts.Â
CSUN had 17 fouls in the contest compared to eight for Air Force and senior Shane Steffes saw the yellow card. The Matadors held an 8-7 advantage in corner kicks while Air Force was caught offsides twice.Â
In the first half, Jumoke Hutton and Patrick Hickman each had shots in the opening 10 minutes. Shem Tov and Grinde each added an attempt on frame and both teams went into the break with six shots and three saves.Â
