NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN men's golf team opened the spring portion of the 2016-17 with a fourth place finish at the Folino Invitational held at Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Pines.
The Matadors opened the tournament Monday morning with a team score of 294, which was good for third place before the second round was suspended due to darkness. All 11 teams finished the second round Tuesday morning before playing the final 18 holes.
CSUN closed with rounds of 302 and 296 to slip to a fourth place finish.
"Considering we haven't been able to play much due to the weather, it was a decent result," said head coach Jim Bracken. "We lost to a few Big West schools and beat a few, but we just didn't get the low score we were looking for. I thought it was a good start to the spring but we need to keep improving as me move forward."
Felix Mory and Tavit Garabedian each had a top 10 finish to lead the Matadors. Mory followed up with rounds of 74-75 on Monday with a final round even-par 72 to finish at five-over 221. Garabedian matched Mory at 221 with rounds of 73-72-76.
It was Mory's first top 10 finish of the season and Garabedian's second after finishing fifth in Stockton in October.
Senior Sam Engel and sophomore Tomas Skajem each narrowly missed his first top-20 finish of the season. The CSUN duo tied for 21st place at nine-over 225 as Engel finished with rounds of 72-78-75 and Skajem finished with scores of 75-77-73.
Trym Falch rounded out the CSUN five as he finished tied for 47th at 21-over 237 following rounds of 77-78-82.
Sevian Frangipane and Michael Zhang played as individuals with Frangipane finishing tied for 38th and Zhang tying for 50th. Frangipane posted his low 54-hole score of the season at 16-over 232 (78-79-85) while Zhang closed with rounds of 81-85 after opening in 10th place with a 72 in round one.
CSUN returns to the course Feb. 13th as the Matadors travel to the Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Invitational at Southern Utah.
