NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Daniel Trejo scored a pair of goals to lead CSUN past UC Irvine 3-2 in Big West men's soccer action Saturday night. The Matadors' victory over the Anteaters allowed CSUN to tie UCI for the lead in the Big West's South Division.
Trejo put the Matadors up 1-0 in the 18th minute. Jumoke Hutton sent a ball into the UC Irvine goalkeepers' box where Trejo was waiting, he controlled the ball with his chest and sent the ball into the Anteaters' net.
UCI tied the score a little over five minutes later when the Big West's leading scorer, Giovanni Godoy took a give-and-go from Mario Ortiz and blasted an attempt into the CSUN net from 20 yards out. UC Irvine would out shoot CSUN 7-4 in the first half, but the score remained tied at one heading into the break.
Trejo put the Matadors into the lead in the 50th minute when he took an Emmanuel Usen Jr. and scored his sixth goal of the season from just inside the 18-yard mark. CSUN extended the lead to 3-1 when Alex Lara headed in a Hutton pass at the 73:40 mark. The Anteaters pressed for the next 5 minutes, resulting in a Godoy attempt from point-blank range. Matador goalie Henrik Regitnig turned away the shot by knocking the ball out of bounds to the right of his net.
UCI continued to march forward. The persistence paid off as Godoy notched his 11th of the year at 86:16 when he directed an Ortiz corner kick into the CSUN goal. UC Irvine earned 36 seconds later, but the Matadors were able to sweep the ball out. The final Anteater threat came with 16 seconds to go when UCI earned their 10th corner of the match. The ball was short, CSUN was able to kick it away to secure the victory.
"Irvine is one of the most tactically and technical teams in our conference and you have to defend," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "You have to put pressure on them and recuperate so we can touch the ball. We wanted to control the possession, so that's why we went after them hard."
Both CSUN (7-6-2, 2-2-2 Big West) and UCI (7-5-3, 2-2-2 Big West have eight points heading into the next-to-last week of the regular season. The Matadors host UC Riverside (2-11, 2-4 Big West) Wednesday night. The Highlanders rallied late to defeat Cal State Fullerton 2-1 Saturday night.
"The Big West is so even right now," Davila said. "You can flip a coin and see who is going to win the next night. We are honored to be in this conference, honored to play in front of our crowd and our alumni. We are very grateful to have this opportunity to play in this league."
