NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Cal State Fullerton pulled into a first-place tie in the Big West Conference South Division with CSUN Wednesday night as the Titans defeated the Matadors 1-0.
Â
Diego Sanchez scored the game winning goal for Cal State Fullerton (9-6-3, 4-3-2 Big West) at the 13:38 mark of the first half. Mark Hernandez sent a ball from the left side of the field across to Sanchez who tallied his second of the season when he sent the ball past Henrik Regitnig through the bottom right of the goal.
Â
After being outshot 4-1 in the first half, CSUN came out with a pair of attempts in the first five minutes of the second including a Daniel Trejo blast that was saved by Paul-Andre Guerin. Samuel Goni recorded the next two shots in the match for the Titans. The Matadors earned a corner in the 66th. Julio Rubio sent the ball towards Emmanuel Usen Jr in front, but Usen Jr.'s header just went wide. A little over two minutes later, Usen Jr had an attempt saved by Guerin.
Â
Regitnig turned away a Bass Sarr shot in the 74th. CSUN went down a man in the 75th when Davis Moreno-Jaime was issued a red card after a scrum near the Cal State Fullerton bench. Sanchez took the final shot of the match in the 80th minute.
Â
The Titans outshot the Matadors 9-6, but each team had four shots on goal. Guerin made four saves while Regitnig had three. Both teams took three corner kicks.
Â
The top three teams in each division of the Big West Conference advance to the league tournament. CSUN and Cal State Fullerton each have 14 points heading into the regular season finale on Saturday. The Matadors travel to UC Riverside for a 7 p.m. match Saturday night.
Â
The Highlanders kept their Big West Tournament hopes alive by defeating UC Irvine 2-1 on Wednesday. UCR (3-12-1, 3-5-1 Big West) has 10 points while UCI drops into fourth in the South Division with eight (7-8-3, 2-5-2 Big West). UC Irvine travels to Cal State Fullerton Saturday night.
Â
CSUN has already clinched a spot in the Big West Tournament, but a Matador victory over the Highlanders combined with a UCI victory over the Titans would give CSUN the South Division title and a first round bye. If both teams tie, Cal State Fullerton would earn the South Division's first round bye.
