CSUNÂ Baseball head coach Greg Moore received the 2017 National Consortium of Academics and Sports' (NCAS) National Student-Athlete Giant Steps Award on Oct. 26 in Orlando, FL.
"The group does so much," said Moore. "Even better than the award was joining a large family of professionals committed to sport as a vehicle for good works. It was a joy and an honor."Â
Named a Giant Steps winner in April, the honor is bestowed upon individuals who through the world of sport have shown courage, heroism, triumph in the midst of adversity. Winners have also been recognized for their community activism. The coaches award is honored to those who uses sports as a vehicle for positive social change, and provides opportunities to people who normally do not have them.
Â
With a focus on grade point average, Moore's baseball team GPA has gone up consistently year-by-year and reached its highest semester average since 2009 last fall.
Â
During his tenure at CSUN, Moore has created "Diamond University," a life skills and personal development course for members of the baseball team. In "DU," student-athletes learn that every experience gained on the field can be translated to life off the field as well. Moore preaches that his student-athletes have a clear and focused mind whether that is during game time or class time.
In the past three seasons, Moore has led the Matadors to 92 victories. The team has also won over 90 Division I games over a three-year span for just the second time in program history. During the 2017 campaign, the Matadors tied the 2013 team for the program's best finish in the Big West Conference in 15 seasons. CSUN also recorded victories over nationally-ranked teams such as Vanderbilt (twice), Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton.
Â
Other recipients of the NCAS Giant Steps award included Texas A&M University swimmer Jonathan Tybur and University of Arizona women's soccer player Alexis Selman, the 1969 University of Wyoming football team, Bonner Paddock, a founder of the OM Foundation and Team Jake, and eight-year old cancer survivor Beckham Zobrist.Â
