CSUN Suffers 4-0 Loss at Hawai'i
5/14/2026 12:07:00 AM | Baseball
HONOLULU---Gabriel Hernandez tossed 6.1 innings, allowing one earned run, but CSUN would be held to just one hit in a 4-0 loss to Hawai'i on Wednesday at Les Murakami Stadium. With the loss, the Matadors were eliminated from postseason contention for the Big West Championship.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hernandez would work into the seventh inning for the fifth time this season, keeping CSUN within striking distance all night. However, the Matador offense could not muster much at the plate against Hawai'i ace Isaiah Magdaleno.Â
Magdaleno took a no-hitter to the fifth inning as he faced just one over the minimum through the first four innings. Mateo Rickman broke up the no-hit bid to start the fifth, but he would eventually be stranded in scoring position in the inning.Â
Meanwhile, CSUN looked up at a 3-0 deficit early as the Rainbow Warriors took advantage of a Matador error to start the bottom of the first. After the miscue, Hawai'i quickly went ahead 1-0 on an RBI single from Tate Shimao. Hernandez managed to retire two of the next three batters, but the Bows picked up a timely two-run double from Jake Redding.Â
Hernandez would work around two walks in the second inning before stranding a base runner in the third. Hawai'i threatned in the fourth with two runners on base and one out, but Hernandez induced a 5-3 double play to end that frame. The Matador right hander picked up another twin killing in the sixth, extinquishing a one-out hit.Â
Hawai'i though added to its lead in the seventh, scoring its first earned run after Hernandez departed the game with a runner at second base. Shimao collected his second RBI of the night when he rifled a double to plate Gabe Wright, making it a 4-0 game.Â
The lead was more than enough for Magdaleno who only allowed one more base runner after the Rickman hit in the fifth. Retiring the final eight batters of the game, Magdaleno finished with 14 strikeouts on the night in earning the shutout win.Â
