HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Aeryn Owens had a team-high 11 kills but the CSUNÂ women's volleyball team dropped a straight set decision (25-19, 25-21, 25-12) to Hawai'i in a Big West Conference match Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Owens was limited to .073 hitting on 41 attacks but also added eight digs and a pair of aces as the Matadors dropped to 10-14 overall and 4-8 in the Big West. Nickeisha Williams added seven kills for CSUNÂ while hitting .417 on 12 swings.
Lauren Conati posted 21 assists and four digs while libero Katie Sato registered a match-high 15 digs in the loss.
As a team, CSUNÂ surrendered 10 aces while serving three but did manage to tie the conference's best blocking team with seven team blocks.
After a Hawai'i service error in the opening set pulled CSUN within two at 7-5, a pair of Matador miscues boosted the lead to 9-5. An attack by Rachel Diaz landed wide extending the lead to 11-6, forcing a Matador timeout. An Owens kill trimmed the lead to 12-9 and fueled a 7-1 CSUN run that put the Matadors in front 14-13.
But back came the hosts behind a 6-2 run to open up a 19-16 lead. After a Daniella Molinari tip found the floor, the Rainbow Wahine scored three more to take their largest lead at 22-17. Hawai'i then closed out the set, 25-19 on a Corey Castillo kill.
In the second set, Markle's ace put the Matadors in front 10-7 before the hosts answered with a 5-0 to force a CSUN timeout. The run extended to 7-0 before an Owens kill ended the run. Trailing 18-13, the Matadors ralllied for three straight to force an Hawai'i timeout at 18-16. Another Owens kill and a Molinari putaway of a Hawai'i overpass cut a 22-18 deficit in half but the hosts took a two-set lead pulling away for the 25-21 win.
The Rainbow Wahine used a 6-0 run to break open a close 8-6 set in the third and never looked back in dispatching the Matadors in straight sets 25-12.
Emily Maglio led Hawai'i (17-7, 11-2 Big West) with a match-high 13 kills while hitting .478 on 23 swings.
CSUNÂ returns to Northridge for its final homestand of the season next week as the Matadors host Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside.
