CSUN Hosts Morgan State to Wrap Up Non-Conference Play

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball concludes non-conference play on Saturday evening against Morgan State on The Blacktop @ The Matadome with tip off slated for 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Alan Zinsmeister and Ryan Stanbury on the call. The Matadors and Bears is the second of a CSUN Basketball Doubleheader as the women's basketball team will kick off the day with a match up with Seattle University at 4 p.m. One ticket is required for both basketball games.Â
The Matadors snapped an 11-game losing streak on Wednesday evening with a convincing 93-63 victory over NAIA team, San Diego Christian. CSUN led from start-to-finish including holding a 39-point advantage during the second half. Hitting 13 3-pointers on the night, the Matadors connected on their most treys in a single game since hitting 16 on March 8, 2008 against Cal Poly. The Matadors also shot a season-high 59.4 percent from the field and 61.9 percent from the 3-point line.Â
Senior forward Tavrion Dawson posted a career-high 33 points on 14-of-22 shooting to go with five rebounds and three assists. Fellow senior, Micheal Warren hit a career-best six 3-pointers (on eight attempts) while he finished with 22 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Freshman guard Terrell Gomez collected a season-high seven assists and tallied 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor. The Matador trio accounted for 69 of the team's 93 points.Â
Dawson has now surpassed 900 career points with his effort against San Diego Christian. Sitting at 925 career points, Dawson is 75 points away from becoming the 19th Matador in team history and 11th in the team's Division I era to reach 1,000 career points. Teammate Warren also may reach 1,000 career points this season as he currently has 764 points. Warren would need to average 13.9 points per game the rest of the way to reach the milestone by the end of the regular season.Â
Checking the Big West leaderboard, Dawson is sixth in the conference in scoring with 15.8 points per game. Team leader in rebounding, Warren is sixth in the league with 6.5 boards and third in defensive rebounds per game (5.8). Gomez remains second in the league in 3-point percentage (54.9) while he is 10th in assists per game (3.0). Warren also remains to be the only Big West player to average at least 13.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists.Â
Behind Dawson, Warren is averaging 13.1 points per game this season followed by Gomez (10.8) and Lyrik Shreiner (8.4). Dawson is among the team leaders in rebounding with 5.6 while Zeno Lake has grabbed 5.0 boards on the year. In his first season on the team, Gomez leads the starters with a 47.3 shooting percentage.Â
The Matadors have won four all-time meetings with Morgan State but officially they hold a 3-0 record in the series after vacating a victory during the 2014-15 season. The teams have met in each of the last four seasons, all at The Matadome, and all but one meeting (Dec. 27, 2013) has been decided by more than 10 points. Last season, CSUN defeated the Bears 82-61 as Dawson finished with 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting. CSUN looks to snap an 11-game losing streak this season (17 overall) to Division I teams when they face the Bears.Â

The Bears come in with a 4-8 record and a six-game losing streak after falling to Grand Canyon (100-74) on Wednesday. Morgan State concludes an eight-game road trek at The Matadome on Saturday. The Bears went 14-16 last season including 11-5 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for a third-place finish.Â
After missing the first 10 games of the season, senior Tiwian Kendley has scored 31 points in both games since returning to the lineup against Grand Canyon and George Mason. Last season, Kendley averaged 21.0 points and 5.3 rebounds. Senior Phillip Carr has averaged 13.7 points and a team-best 8.8 rebounds. As a team, Morgan State is averaging 67.9 points, 36.6 rebounds and 7.6 steals.Â
