Junior Savannah Horvath Collects Home Run, Triple
TUCSON, Ariz. --- Fordham's Madison Shaw delivered a pinch-hit, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Rams over the CSUN softball team (0-4) Saturday morning at the Hillenbrand Invitational in Tucson, AZ. Junior Savannah Horvath smacked her first home run and triple of the season, but the Rams rallied for three runs over the final two innings to hand defeat to the Matadors.
CSUN held a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. Tara Kliebenstein doubled and then scored on an RBI single from Madison Fleming in the second inning to tie the game. Horvath then led off the third with her 23rd career home run and give CSUN a 2-1 advantage. In the fifth, Horvath laced a triple into left field and came into score on a sac fly from Taylor Glover.
However, CSUN starter Daphne Pofek (0-2) ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth. A lead-off walk and a two-run home run tied the game before Pofek could get out of the frame. In the seventh, Shaw completed the comeback as the first batter in the inning.
Pofek allowed five hits and three earned runs to go with three strike outs in six innings. Madison Aughinbaugh tossed seven innings with five Ks and seven hits allowed in victory for Fordham.
In the second game of the day, Tulsa struck for seven runs over the first three innings and then held off a late Matador rally to claim a 7-4 victory.
CSUN starter Rebecca Bell (0-1) allowed five hits and five runs in 2.1 innings of work, but only three runs were earned as errors continued to torment the Matadors. Cheyenne Noli tossed the final 4.2 innings for the Matadors, allowing six hits and two runs (one unearned).
CSUN actually tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first. With one out, Glover singled, stole second and then scored on an RBI double from Kliebenstein. She then came around to score on a fielding error.
After CSUN loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth but stranded all three, the Matadors struck for two runs in the sixth. Aliyah Ricks started the frame with a pinch-hit single and was replaced by a pinch runner. After a strikeout and a fielder's choice, Taylor Nate reached on an error and she and Jessica Rothanzl scored on a two-run single from Mackenzie Babbitt.
Katie Hooper started the seventh with her first double of the season, but she would be left on base when the game ended. That two-base hit moves Hooper into second in school history with 37 for her career. Glover had two steals on the day to give her 71 for her career while Babbitt set a new career high with the two RBIs.
CSUN faces Northwestern on Sunday, Feb. 12 in its final game of the HIllenbrand Invitational. Next weekend, CSUN travels to Cathedral City, CA to compete in the Mary Nutter Cathedral Classic to face No. 9 Oregon, No. 20 Kentucky, Arkansas, LMU and Saint Mary's from Feb. 17-19.
