Senior Daphne Pofek Tosses Five Innings of Relief in Win
En Español
TUCSON, Ariz. --- Senior Daphne Pofek tossed five innings of one-run softball in relief and freshman Jessica Alexander blasted her first career home run as the CSUN softball team (1-4) defeated Northwestern 7-5 Sunday morning at the Hillenbrand Invitational in Tucson, AZ. Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Matadors rallied for five runs in the frame, tacked on an insurance run in the sixth and held off the Wildcats to post their first win in the all-time series since 1998.
A grand slam in the second gave Northwestern an early advantage and chased CSUN starter Katie Chenault from the circle. The Matadors inched back with a run in their half of the second as Alexander drove in Katie Hooper with an RBI groundout.
Hooper would get the rally started in the five-run fourth with a lead-off single. A fielder's choice put Tara Kliebenstein on first and she trotted home on Alexander's blast over the right field fence. With two outs in the frame, Madison Fleming drew a walk and Taylor Nate reached on a fielding error. After a pitching change, Mackenzie Babbitt singled on the infield and Taylor Glover smacked a two-run single to give CSUN a 5-4 lead. Savannah Horvath was then hit by a pitch and Hooper drew a bases-loaded walk to give CSUN a 6-4 advantage.
CSUN added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Nate singled, moved to second on a sac bunt by Babbitt and then came around to score after she stole third and the throw sailed into left field.
Pofek (1-2) was stellar in relief, allowing just three hits and one run in five innings. She slammed the door on a Wildcat rally in the seventh, getting a sac fly and a groundout to end the game after Northwestern had loaded the bases with one out.
Glover added a stolen base in the win, her third of the season and 72nd of her career to move into a tie with UC Riverside's Ariel Shore for sixth in Big West Conference history. The win snapped a four-game losing streak to Northwestern and represents CSUN's first win in the series since a 7-2 victory on Feb. 7, 1998.
Next weekend, CSUN travels to Cathedral City, CA to compete in the Mary Nutter Cathedral Classic and will face No. 9 Oregon, No. 20 Kentucky, Arkansas, LMU and Saint Mary's from Feb. 17-19.
