CSUN Softball Falls Twice Friday at Mary Nutter Classic

Matadors Fall 8-7 to Arkansas, 8-0 to No. 8 Washington
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (1-6) lost 8-7 to Arkansas and 8-0 to No. 8 Washington Friday afternoon at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. In the opener, the Razorbacks rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh to edge the Matadors, who got home runs from Taylor Glover and Katie Hooper. In the nightcap, the Matadors totaled five hits against their third ranked opponent of 2017, but the Huskies scored multiple runs in three innings to take the victory.Â
Arkansas Recap
Glover finished 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBIs, a home run and a stolen base while Tara Kliebenstein and Taylor Nate had multi-hit games against Arkansas. Hooper added her first home run of the season and 25th of her career to move into seventh in program history. With two RBIs in the game, Hooper now has 126 career RBIs to claim fourth in program history.
Kliebenstein added a double and Savannah Horvath picked up her first stolen base of the season and 38th of her career to move into a three-way tie for fourth in program history. Glover's stolen base was her team-leading fourth of the season and 73rd of her career, moving her into a tie for fifth in Big West Conference history.Â
Daphne Pofek made the start in the circle, tossing the first five innings and allowing three hits and three runs, although just one of those was earned. Taylor Troost (0-2) tossed a quiet sixth before running into trouble in the seventh. She gave up five earned runs and three hits in 1.2 innings of work.Â
CSUN jumped ahead 3-1 in the third after Glover's deep fly and Jessica Alexander added an RBI groundout. After Arkansas tied the game in the fifth, CSUN pulled back ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Nate. CSUN added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth behind Hooper's home run and an error. However, Arkansas prevailed in the seventh, getting a three-run home run with two outs to claim the victory.Â

Facing their third ranked team in seven games, the Matadors managed five hits but could not push a run across against the Huskies. Glover had her second multi-hit game of the day and Madison Fleming, Horvath and Alexander had singles. One of Glover's hits was her first double of the season and 31st of her career, moving her into a four-way tie for sixth in program history.Â
Freshman Cheyenne Noli (0-1) made the start in the circle, but Washington opened the game with a walk and a two-run home run to chase her from the circle after one oun in the first. Rebecca Bell tossed 2.2 innings in relief and allowed two earned runs and four hits. Troost tossed three innings of relief and allowed one hit and one run while Pofek tossed the seventh and allowed six hits and three runs.Â
Washington struck for two runs in the first, two in the second, one in the fifth and three in the seventh to post the victory.
Weather permitting, the Matadors are scheduled to face No. 7 Oregon and No. 23 Kentucky Saturday afternoon at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.Â
