NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN beach volleyball officially kicked off the 2017 home schedule Thursday as the Matadors split dual matches with Colorado Mesa and second-ranked Pepperdine at the Matador Beach Volleyball Facility.
The Matadors (2-2) got the day off to a successful start, topping Colorado Mesa by the score of 4-1. The CSUN duo of Maddie Leiphardt and Nickeisha Williams picked up the first win of the day at No. 2, sweeping the Mavericks 21-12, 21-14. The result kept Leiphardt and Williams unbeaten this season at 3-0.
In the No. 4 match, Aeryn Owens and Erin Indermill teamed up for the first time this season and came away with a 21-16, 21-23, 15-9 victory over Hana Peterman and Kricket Adleman. The next contest to go final was the No. 5 match with CSUN's Nico Stork and Nicolette Pinkney taking the final two sets to defeat CMU 20-22, 21-12, 15-12, ensuring the win for the Matadors.
The teams split the final two matches as Julie Haake and Katie Sato picked up their first win of the season at No. 1 defeating Taylor Woods and Abby Ney 19-21, 21-15, 15-10. The visiting Mavericks got on the board in the No. 3 match to complete the dual as MacKenzie Edwards and Hattie Gianinetti held off CSUN's Kristey Markle and Autumn Russell 13-21, 22-20, 15-12.
In the middle dual match, Pepperdine swept Colorado Mesa 5-0.
The Matadors (2-3) and Waves then completed the day with Pepperdine (10-1) again coming out on top 5-0 without dropping a set. Delaney Knudsen and Maddy Roh swept Haake and Sato 21-8, 21-14 at No. 1. Leiphardt and Williams battled the Pepperdine pair of Corinne Quiggle and Brittany Howard before bowing 21-16, 21-17 at No. 2.
Owens and Indermill moved up to the No. 3 match but fell to the Waves 21-12, 21-16. Markle and Russell played at No. 4 and dropped a 21-11, 21-17 decision to Anika Wilson and Deahna Kraft. Kaity Bailey and Gigi Hernandez completed the Pepperdine sweep at No. 5, topping Stork and Pinkney 21-9, 21-11.Â
The Waves also captured the exhibition match as Nikki Lyons and Tiffany Morales swept Molinari and Rosso 21-10, 21-11.
"We saw two different styles and two different levels of play today, but overall I thought it was a great day for CSUNÂ beach volleyball," said head coach Jeff Stork. "Colorado Mesa is a good quality team and we were put into some tough situations and responded well. Pepperdine has a different style of play and they're a very deep team but I'm happy and proud of the way we played and that our players were composed. We have some young and inexperienced beach players and playing a team like Pepperdine we were exposed a little bit."Â
