Matadors and Roadrunners Renew Historical Rivalry

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (18-11) travels to CSU Bakersfield for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Mar. 26 at the Roadrunner Softball Complex. The Matadors and Roadrunners will renew a longtime rivalry that dates back to both teams' time in Division II. Last week, CSUN went 4-1 at the Matador Classic, posting victories over Northern Colorado, Quinnipiac and two against Murray State. The Matadors needed extra innings to seal a comeback victory over the Bears, scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth after Northern Colorado plated three of its own in the top of the inning. Against Quinnipiac, the Matador offense came to life in an 8-0, six-inning victory in which the Matadors produced several multi-hit performances.Â
In Monday's doubleheader against Murray State, the Matadors pounded out a pair of victories as Madison Fleming and Savannah Horvath each recorded five-RBI games. In the circle, Taylor Troost tossed a two-hit shutout of the Racers in game two, a squad that entered the contest with an RPI of 67. In the victories, Taylor Glover passed former Matador All-American Barbara Jordan in both career steals (83) and hits (260) to move into second in school history in both categories.Â
This weekend, CSUN takes on a CSU Bakersfield team that enters the weekend with a 4-17 record. The Roadrunners play a doubleheader at Cal Poly on Saturday, Mar. 25 before facing the Matadors. Nadia Amezcua leads the squad with a .340 batting average, four doubles and 14 runs scored while Julea Cavazos has a team-high 20 hits and 10 RBIs. In the circle, opponents are batting .321 with 28 doubles and 14 home runs against Roadrunner pitching. The Matadors posted a 10-3, six-inning win over the Roadrunners on Sunday, April 12 at Matador Diamond.Â

The CSUN softball team's doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, May 6 will be broadcast by the Big West Conference on ESPN3.
