Tara Kliebenstein Smashes Home Run in Each Game
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (20-11) defeated CSU Bakersfield 10-2 in six innings and 9-2 Sunday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at Roadrunner Softball Complex. The Matadors smashed five home runs and five doubles on the day to sweep the season series with the Roadrunners.
In game one, the Matadors smashed three home runs, four doubles and a triple to down the Roadrunners 10-2 in six innings. Jessica Alexander, Tara Kliebenstein and Taylor Glover all went deep while Katie Hooper added two doubles in the victory. Alexander and Glover added doubles and Taylor Nate collected the triple as CSUN won for the 17th time in its last 20 games.
Alexander started the fireworks with a solo home run, her sixth of the season and tying with Savannah Horvath for the team lead, in the top of the first. In the top of the second, Kliebenstein blasted a three-run home run, her third of the season, to score Karlie Habitz and Horvath.
Glover then added a solo shot, her fifth of the year and 21st of her CSUN career, in the top of the third. Hooper added an RBI double that scored Alexander, who also doubled, and then she scored on a base hit and an error off the bat of Horvath. In the fourth, Hooper roped a two-run double to score Alexander and Nate and in the sixth, Nate led off the inning with a triple and scored on Glover's double.
That was more than enough support for CSUN starter Daphne Pofek (9-3). She scattered two hits with a strikeout in 3.2 innings of work to post her 35th career victory in the circle. Taylor Troost tossed the final 2.1 innings for the Matadors, fanning one without allowing a hit.
In all, Alexander finished 2-for-4 and tied a career high with three runs scored. Hooper was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored while Glover was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Kliebenstein was 2-for-2 and tied a career high with three RBIs. She, Horvath and Mackenzie Babbitt all had stolen bases in the win.
In game two, CSUN scored six runs in the fifth and added three more in the sixth. Hooper and Kliebenstein both hit home runs while Madison Fleming added a double and Taylor Glover recorded her first triple of the season and 15th of her career, moving her into a tie for ninth in Big West Conference history.
With the Matadors trailing 1-0, Kliebenstein blasted her second home run of the day to tie the game. Nate was then hit by a pitch, Glover singled on the infield and Alexander reached on an error to load the bases. With two outs, Fleming blasted a double off the wall in left to score two and after Horvath and Babbitt were hit by a pitch, Alejandra Rascon punched a two-run single through the infield to give the Matadors a 6-1 advantage.
In the sixth, Nate was hit by a pitch to start the inning and then scored on an RBI triple from Glover. After she scored on a passed ball, Hooper blasted her sixth home run of the season and 30th of her career to give CSUN a 9-2 advantage. Hooper became just the fifth player in program history to reach 30 career home runs.
In the circle, Troost (8-4) picked up the victory after allowing just two hits and one earned run with three strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work. Rebecca Bell tossed the final two innings and had two Ks while Cheyenne Noli tossed the seventh and recorded her first career strikeout.
The four RBIs on the day helped Hooper tie Chelo Lopez for second in school history and UNLV's Kim Rodina for eighth in Big West history with 149 career RBIs. Her two doubles in the game one victory give her 44 for her career, one shy of tying Sandra Milchiker's school record of 45. Glover scored three runs over the two games to raise her career total to 152, tying her for fifth in Big West Conference history.
Winners of 18 of their past 21 games, the Matadors enter Big West Conference play with a road series at Long Beach State. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 1 and a single game on Sunday, April 2 with both days slated for a 1 p.m. start.
