The Matadors look to regroup after dropping three of four games at Washington State this past weekend. After rain washed out Friday's intended opener, the Matadors were swept in a Saturday doubleheader as the Cougars won 11-7 and 3-0. CSUN bounced back with a 3-1 win on Sunday afternoon but the Cougars took the series finale, 6-4.Â
The junior tandem of Kevin Riley and Albee Weiss led the Matadors in the RBI department, collecting nine of the team's 13 on the weekend. Kevin Riley finished with a .294 batting average, a home run, five RBI, three doubles and two runs scored while Weiss delivered four RBI with a double, triple and a run scored.Â
Having a strong weekend at the plate and on the mound, junior Justin Toerner hit .313 with four runs scored and a double but he also made his first career start on Sunday as he earned his first win by tossing five shutout innings. Toerner also surrendered just one hit and struck out a career-best six batters. Posting yet another quality start, junior Tei Vanderford logged seven innings and allowed just a run on one hit to go along with four strikeouts.Â
Top run producer on the team, Weiss leads the Big West with 24 RBI and is tied for second with teammate Riley with five home runs this season. Weiss is also hitting .280 with 12 runs scored, six doubles and two triples while Riley is posting a .290 batting average to go along with 19 RBI, 18 runs scored and nine doubles. Junior Alvaro Rubalcaba leads CSUN with a .295 average at the plate with 13 runs scored, 12 walks, 10 RBI and three home runs. Also picking up the load offensively, senior Fred Smith is batting .276 with 16 runs scored and seven RBI while Toerner has hit .275 with 14 runs scored, two home runs and eight RBI.Â
The Matadors' weekend pitching rotation has been a strength all year long, posting a combined 2.71 ERA this season. Earning his first Friday start of the season, Vanderford will take the mound in the opener against the Aggies. Currently fifth in the nation in hits allowed per nine innings (4.37), Vanderford is 3-2 with a 1.59 ERA and 32 strikeouts across 45.1 innings. Senior right hander Samuel Myers comes into Saturday's start with a 2-3 record, a 3.89 ERA and 29 strikeouts. Taking the hill in the series finale, junior right hander Andrew Weston remains 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA to go along with 24 strikeouts after not pitching last weekend.Â
The Aggies lead the all-time series with the Matadors 23-14 but have lost the last four games in the series. CSUNÂ earned just its second sweep ever over UC Davis last season at Matador Field. Dylan Alexander registered five hits in the series along with two RBI while Weston picked up a win in the finale as he allowed two runs over 5.2 innings. In his career, Conner O'Neil has saved three games against UC Davis and given up no runs in five innings to go along with nine strikeouts. UC Davis has won 13 of 18 meetings all-time at home against CSUN and earned series wins five of six times in those contests.Â
A Closer Look at UC Davis
The Aggies are 6-12 on the season after dropping two of three games at Creighton last weekend. UC Davis traveled to Omaha on Wednesday for a makeup game but the contest was rained out. At Dobbins Stadium, the Aggies have won four of eight games. Last season, UC Davis finished 17-36 and 5-19 in conference play.Â
Sophomore Ryan Anderson is registering a team-best .361 at the plate with 14 RBI, 12 runs scored, four doubles and three home runs.
