Cal-CSUN Final Results // LMU-CSUN Final Results
NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUNÂ beach volleyball team lost a pair of dual matches Thursday as the Matadors dropped a 3-2 decision to California before being swept by Loyola Marymount at the CSUN Beach Volleyball Facility.
As was the case Saturday against Stanford, the Matadors (2-6) pushed Cal to the limit before falling in the final stages of the second flight.
The Bears got on the board first when Iya Lindahl and Nicole Anderson defeated CSUN's Kristey Markle and Autumn Russell in three sets (21-16, 22-24, 15-10) at No. 4. Maddie Leiphardt and Nickeisha Williams pulled the Matadors even in the No. 2 match as the CSUN duo held off the Cal pair of Olivia Rodberg and Grace Campbell 23-21, 19-21, 15-11.
Cal then sealed the dual victory with wins in the next two matches. The Bears claimed a 21-13, 21-11 win in the No. 5 match as Teya Neff and Bridget Gustafson swept Nico Stork and Nicolette Pinkney followed by a 21-11, 21-14 in the No. 1 match. On center court, Mia Merino and Jessica Gaffney swept Julie Haake and Katie Sato.
The Matadors bounced back to win at No. 3 as Aeryn Owens and Erin Indermill won a 21-17, 16-21, 15-12 decision over Bryce Bark and Camille Stepanof.
In the middle contest, Cal also defeated Loyola Marymount by the same 3-2 score.
As the wind gradually picked up in the afternoon dual, the Lions blanked the Matadors despite three of the five contests going the distance.
LMU struck first in the No. 2 match as Jessie Pritchard and Sara Kovac handed Leiphardt and Williams just their second loss of the season 21-16, 21-10. In the No. 4 match, Owens and Indermill fell to Emma Doud and Veronica Nederend in a three-set thriller 17-21, 21-17, 19-17.
The Lions swept Stork and Pinkney in the No. 5 match 21-18, 21-18 before the Matadors pushed the final two matches to the limit. After dropping the first set 22-20, Haake and Sato battled back to win the second set 22-20 but couldn't hang on in set three, falling 15-11. In the final match of the day, LMU's Kekai Whitford and Brittnay Estes defeated Markle and Russell 21-15, 18-21, 17-15.
In the exhibition match, Kameryn Hall and Tatiana Schlange held off CSUN's Daniella Molinari and Cassidy Rosso 21-17, 18-21, 15-13.
"Similar to the Stanford match, we definitely played Cal tough and it's difficult to swallow another 3-2 loss," said CSUN assistant coach Noelle Rooke. "Even though we lost to LMU, we saw progress from top to bottom from the last time we played them as three of the five matches went the distance. Overall we are seeing a lot of improvement in all of our pairings."
CSUN travels to Huntington Beach this weekend to take on Sacramento State, Cal Poly, Hawai'i and Long Beach State as part of the Big West Challenge.
