NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUNÂ beach volleyball team got back in the win column Saturday as the Matadors split a pair of dual matches at the Big West Challenge at Huntington Beach.
Playing exclusively Big West teams over the two-day tournament, CSUN (3-7) opened Saturday with a 4-1 win over Sacramento State to snap a four match skid.
In the win over the Hornets, the Matadors picked up wins in the top four matches led by the No. 1 pair of Julie Haake and Katie Sato who won 21-16, 21-14. Haake and Sato also snapped a four-match losing streak with the win. In the No. 2 match, Maddie Leiphardt and Nickeisha Williams earned their team-high sixth win of the year after taking a three-set win over the Hornets, 17-21, 21-11, 15-6.
At No. 3, Aeryn Owens and Erin Indermill continued to play well as the pair won its third match in the last four outings. Owens and Indermill swept Brie Gathright and Skyler Takeda 21-17, 21-12 to improve to 4-2 on the season. CSUN also won at No. 4 as Kristey Markle and Autumn Russell snapped a five match skid with a 21-13, 21-18 win. Sacramento State's Courtney Dietrich and Brigette Murdock topped the Matador duo of Nico Stork and Nicolette Pinkney in three sets (21-17, 18-21, 15-11) at No. 5.
Looking to make it two in a row on Saturday, the Matadors dropped another tough 3-2 decision as Cal Poly topped CSUN in the afternoon match.
Owens and Indermill picked up their fifth win in the No. 3 match as the CSUN pair came back to win the final two sets over the Mustang duo of Raeann Greisen and Heather Pembroke 17-21, 21-15, 16-14. Stork and Pinkney also got back in the win column with an 18-21, 21-19, 15-8 win in the No. 5 match.
The other three matches went to Cal Poly in straight sets as Haake and Sato lost 21-18, 21-10 at No. 1 and Leiphardt and Williams lost 21-14, 21-17 at No. 2. The No. 3 match was a battle as Markle and Russell dropped a pair of deuce sets (23-21, 24-22) to Anna Gorman and Savannah Nieman to clinch the dual for the Mustangs.
"We had a strong start to the weekend beating Sac State but again we suffered yet another tough 3-2 loss to Cal Poly," said CSUN assistant coach Noelle Rooke. "To be in every match, we just have to find ways to play more aggressively as our competition gets tougher."
CSUNÂ has a pair of duals on Sunday as the Matadors take on No. 5 Hawai'i at 12:30 p.m. and No. 6 Long Beach State at 3:30 p.m.
