Matadors Pound Several Home Runs in games with Weber State, Boise State
NAMPA, Idaho -- The CSUN softball team (8-9) had a strong day at the plate Saturday, although they do not necessarily have a win to show for it yet. The Matadors fell 14-11 to Weber State in the opening game, hitting four home runs but also surrendering six runs in the bottom of the ninth. In the second game, the Matadors jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the fifth inning before play was suspended for darkness. The game will resume in the top of the fifth with one on Sunday morning.Â
Weber State Recap
In the first game of the day, CSUN could not close out Weber State and fell 14-11 after allowing six runs in the bottom of the ninth. For the 34th time in program history a Matador hit two home runs in a game with senior Madison Fleming etching her name into the record book Saturday. She blasted a solo shot in the fourth and then in the sixth, tied the game at 8-8 with another solo blast. She finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs.Â
Fellow seniors Katie Hooper and Tara Kliebenstein also smashed home runs in the loss. For Hooper, the home run was her fourth of the season and 28th of her career, tying her with Mikayla Thielges for sixth in program history. She finished 2-for-2 with a walk and a season-high four RBIs. Kliebenstein hit her first home run of the season and fourth of her career and finished 1-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs.Â
For Hooper, the four RBIs raised her season total to 12 and her career total to 135, the 10th-most in Big West Conference history. She passed Estee Okamura of Pacific, who had 134 career RBIs for the Tigers.Â
In a wild game that saw the teams combine for 22 hits and nine runs in the final inning, CSUN jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the second as a Wildcat error extended the frame and Kliebenstein made them pay with a three-run home run. However, the lead was short lived as Weber State smacked a grand slam off CSUN starter Rebecca Bell to tie the game. The senior went 1.1 innings and had a strikeout.Â
The Matadors got the lead back immediately in the third. Taylor Glover and Jessica Alexander started the inning with consecutive singles and then successfully executed a double steal to put runners on second and third. Hooper then drove both home with a single and moved all the way to third on an error on the play.Â
Leading 6-4, Cheyenne Noli allowed a base hit but nothing else in the third. In the fourth, Fleming made it a three-run home run with her first home run of the game, but the Wildcats scored two of their own to cut the deficit to 7-6 after four full innings. Then in the bottom of the fifth, they added two more runs to take an 8-7 lead.Â
Fleming tied things with a solo home run in the top of the sixth and Daphne Pofek (4-3) retired the side in the bottom half of the frame. Neither team could push across another run until the ninth, when the international tie-break rule was put into place.Â
In the ninth, Glover picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice and then scored on Hooper's two-run shot. Leading 11-8, CSUN then saw Weber State rally for six runs in the bottom of the ninth and walk off with the win on a three-run home run.Â
Pofek was saddled with the loss, tossing 3.2 innings with five earned runs and two strikeouts. Noli also went 3.2 innings and was charged with three earned runs.Â
Boise State Game Update    Game Play By Play
The Matadors held a commanding 9-0 lead in the top of the fifth against Boise State when the game was suspended because of darkness. Karlie Habitz, Alexander and Kliebenstein all blasted home runs in the contest.Â
Fleming continued a torrid day with an RBI single in the top of the first to score Alexander. The freshman then took advantage of a Bronco error and blasted a grand slam in the second. In the third, Fleming tripled to start the inning and scored on a sac fly from Savannah Horvath. In the fourth, Kliebenstein hit a solo home run and Habitz blasted a two-run shot in the fifth that also scored Horvath.Â
Play was suspended with Kliebenstein and Taylor Nate on first and second with one out in the inning.Â
In the first four innings, Taylor Troost allowed five hits but kept Boise State off the scoreboard. With the four scoreless innings, Troost will start the bottom of the fifth Sunday with a 29-inning scoreless streak.Â
A complete recap and full stats will be published Sunday as CSUN is also scheduled to play Santa Clara to wrap up their time in Idaho.Â
