NORTHRIDGE, CA - After splitting a pair of dual matches Saturday, the CSUN beach volleyball team ran into a pair of top 10 teams Sunday, falling to No. 5 Hawai'i and No. 6 Long Beach State at the Big West Challenge at Huntington Beach.
The Matadors, who swept Sacramento State for their lone win Saturday, were swept in all five matches by both Hawai'i and Long Beach State Sunday.
"We knew playing the No. 5 and No. 6 teams in the nation was going to be a tough challenge today," said CSUN assistant coach Noelle Rooke. "I think both Hawai'i and Long Beach handled the wind better than we did and used it to their advantage."
CSUN (3-9) opened with the fifth-ranked Rainbow Wahine and came closest to picking up a set in the No. 1 match as Julie Haake and Katie Sato dropped the opening set to Morgan Martin and Mikayla Tucker 21-18. The second set went to Hawai'i by the score of 21-9 and the No. 2 match also went to the Rainbow Wahine by the score of 21-10, 21-11.
Aeryn Owens and Erin Indermill lost in the No. 3 match 21-11, 21-14 while Kristey Markle and Autumn Russell battled in the second set at No. 4 before falling 21-15. Hawai'i finished the sweep at No. 5 as Ari Homayun and Carly Kan swept Nico Stork and Nicolette Pinkney 21-11, 21-10.
In the tournament finale against the sixth-ranked 49ers Sunday afternoon, the Matadors came up empty in all five matches as Haake and Sato again came the closest to picking up at least a set win for CSUN. In the No. 1 match against Morgan Martin and Mikayla Tucker, Haake and Sato dropped set one 21-16 before fighting to the wire in set two before bowing 22-20.
Stork and Pinkney also went down to the wire in the first set at No. 5 falling 21-19 before Long Beach won set two by the score of 21-12. Markle and Russell lost at No.4 by the identical scores of 21-15, 21-15 and Owens/Indermill lost 21-12, 12-16 in the No. 3 match.
The Matadors conclude the home schedule next week as they host a pair of tri-duals at the CSUN Beach Volleyball Facility. On Thursday (Apr. 13), the Matadors host CSU Bakersfield and Cal State LA before concluding the home season Friday (Apr. 14) against Concordia-Irvine and Arizona State.
